Hey comrades,

I am motivated to start an anarchist movement in my area, but it has proved to be quite difficult. I am residing in the south county of St. Louis, MO, and have moved from North Bay, CA
First of all, my high school is filled with apathetic, ignorant kids who only care about the next time they are going to get fucked up. Also, the only political exposure I have seen is some liberal and a lot of conservative, but nothing very intelligent. There is also rampant racism and xenophobia.

Out side of the school, the city is extremely right wing and religious. There is a church every few blocks. The school I go to is extremely oppressive, to the extent that I am considering Independent Studies. I had been putting up flyers and posters through out the school, but every time they are torn down by the faculty within a few hours.

Im just wondering, if any of you have seen this type of problem and have seen ignorant and apathetic people be sparked into revolutionary ideals, becuase that is the problem I am seeking to tackle.

Thanks

Student organizing in high school is a huge pain in the ass and doesn't pay off too much. I would suggest finding any local progressive community groups and seeing where you can go from there.

Well the thing is, that at least in my area of residence (there is an info shop and a left wing community about 45 minutes from me) everyone is like this. The whole town, except for a few people I met who kind of "think for themselves" who really like left politics.

But yeah, there really isnt any groups around. I mean, if there was, obviously that would be my first move. But I now am trying to be the one to start the movement.

It really sucks that a bunch of fascist white supremacists can spread so fast because of how easy it is to hate, but it is extremely hard to get people into left politics, because it actually requires some cognitive thought.

Blaming workers for the poison fed to them by the capitalists and their media isn't the way to build for revolution.

Also, don't forget that the workers took over in St. Louis (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/East_St._Louis,_Illinois#The_Great_Railroad_Strike _of_1877_and_the_St._Louis_commune) at one point in History.

I recommend reading Rules for Radicals and How to win friends and influence people.

Now, don't get me wrong; I'm well aware that the first was written for right-populists and the second is a primer for the middle class, everything you need to know about how to commodify your relationships.

They both have information that could be really useful in gaining community support. Remember, you aren't going to change their values; you have to show how your program supports what they want. . . and how they want what you want.

Best of luck.
