Arreola's post got me thinking. :thumbup1:

Many times, I've observed that light-skinned people in predominantly dark-skinned ethnic groups often discriminate against the darker members. This is especially so in Indo-Pak communities, Latinos etc. In the UK, I know many Pakistanis referring to darker pakistanis/indians using the N word.:( And there are many Latinos who do the same thing with respect to Blacks.

Question, is colonialism the only cause for this? People say these ethnic groups were all once ruled by imperialists, and because imperialists were white (and rulers at that), they put two and two together, and concluded that white=superior, non-white=inferior:crying:. This is the logic I often hear from some people.

But I find it hard to believe, because most of these nations have become independent long time ago. But more importantly, I can't believe that people could be so gullible as to be brainwashed with such 'white is right' propaganda.

So are there other reasons for this bizarre behavior?

even in non-caucasian led countrys the more lightskined people are still the ruling class most of the time.
and i do think that that is an colonial legacy because you see it always in countrys that became indepent under an by the colonial powers instalted transition goverment and far less in countrys that liberated it self trough an revolution.

so i think this
People say these ethnic groups were all once ruled by imperialists, and because imperialists were white (and rulers at that), they put two and two together, and concluded that white=superior, non-white=inferior is to simplistic but like the popular slogan here goes "achter het racisme staat het kapitaal" (behind the racism is the financial power). In general the ruling class is lighter skinned and will be racist because they feel superiour over the darkerskinned have nots and/or feel threatend by them and use racism to protect there intrests.

People who are themselves susceptible to racial discrimination, and this is something which could happen in all socially unequal situations, not just with racism, like to consider themselves immune to the stereotyping, insults, unfavorable social perception by distancing themselves from it as much as they can, by being discriminatory towards those seen as being in a socially more vulnerable position.
As a.. self-affirmation thing.
By being consciously racially discriminatory towards those darker than yourself, you personally place yourself in a position of superiority to those people.
'They do deserve racism, as opposed to myself who is in an adaquet position to be racist.'
Like I said, it's not just with racism. I've known of gay people insulting those they deem too 'feminine', and also women can be very misogynistic, at times, ridiculing typical female qualities, so as to make themselves feel less vulnerable to sexist discrimination, by placing the blame upon these stereotypes, rather than social discrimination itself.
It's a form of self protection.
