I'd like to think I'm fairly versed in the leftist stance on immigration and borders. Nevertheless, in case the issue of immigration comes up again in the near future, I'd like to be well-prepared to defend it against right-wingers.

What are some good arguments to back up the case for open borders and the free movement of people? And what of the right-wing arguments against these stances, such as strains in the system, drug cartels and gangs, national sovereignty, etc.?

This issue is of special interest to me, seeing as I'm an immigrant myself. Thanks in advance for any help.

If they are American ask them if they think they should be free to move between states. When they say they should, ask them why national borders should be treated differently from state borders.

Any answer they give will be easily knocked down. Hell you can even go back to the legal basis for the US pointing out that it is a collection of sovereign entities in agreement with one another to, amongst other things, keep their borders open to one another. It should follow that anyone who thinks that borders would be better off closed amongst countries should also think that they should be closed amongst states.

Draw a line on the ground randomly and tell them that they are not allowed to cross it.

strains in the system, drug cartels and gangs, national sovereignty, etc.?

What has immigration to do with those things?THe "immigration problem" is just a creativity of the capitalists where they try to pass their own needs and only. There is not an "immigration problem" this is a complete falsehood!

You cant choose where you were born, so Nationalism is hardly worthy of debate.

Are you arguing for open borders under a capitalist system? I don't know how to argue that, but under anarchism (really all leftism) there would be no system to strain. Plus there would be no reason to violently sell drugs because no money would be made from it, the circumstances won't require one to sell drugs to make it (make due, I should have said). Gangs also, there may still be organisations of people, but no money will be made from them so there is no real reason for them (I figure gang violence will dissolve after a revolution).

Open borders would be manageable if the country extended citizenship to all immigrants; they would be part of the "grid" and pay their taxes. If immigrants even do "leech" money out of the welfare pool - which is debatable, since they put a lot of surplus revenue into the hands of their employers - it's because the government won't recognize them as our equals.

Drug cartels are a non-issue. Leftists oppose drug criminalization.
