i am seriously considering it, i know you guy hate the military and all that stuff, but i need the money eh! jobs started to become scarces all over canada, so i am looking for something.

i know all what your thinking, but if i remember well in canada there is a section in the 3 year contract that say you could not be forced to fight oversea.

i am seriously considering it, for the money, but also for the military training.

It can actually be quite useful because of the extra money, military training, the fact that jobs like that will always exist and be available (no matter if there is a credit crunch), and the fact that in the small wars which countries like Canada find themselves in you are unlikely to be sent off to a warzone and if you are it would only be as an engineer or something (not in a frontline combat role).

Go for it if that is what you really want and if not then perhaps the credit crunch will end up forcing you into the reserves?:(

Engineer.. Not a frontline combat role?
Sure, while building a wall you might get shot, fucking around with IEDs you might blow yourself up, but its not frontline combat. Either way, Engineers learn some useful skills, would be great in the future.

Things must be different in the U.S. (Non combat Engineers lol)

I thought that the mine clearers and bomb disposal sorted out IED's?

Anyway no role in the army is 100% certain to keep you out of trouble but I would rather rebuild bridges which we captured yonks back then be the one who had to fight to capture it!

From what I've been told by CF Reserve recruiters, deployment to Afghanistan can only be voluntary when you're in the Reserves. So long as you're not in the regular force, and in a unit which is up for deployment, there's little chance you'll be sent there.

It is useful. I'd say do it.

Engineers are often taught EOD stuff.

I'd feel much safer as regular Infantry than knowing the IED im disconnecting can blow up in my face at any time.

Either way, if there is only a small chance your going to go fight, then I dont see why you shouldnt join the military.

My folks are already pushing me to join the Navy (Family tradition basically..) in a year.

Don't, you need the money but it's still not really worth it. Can't you get a job at a crap supermarket or something?

at a crap supermarket:laugh::laugh:

Killfacer, I gotta hand it to you, you've got a way with words!

But honestly, why are supermarkets "crap" in your worldview? Corporate ownership?

Ah, well the military isnt going to pay you much money either, and your stuck with it when you go in. So if thats the reason, its probably not for the best.

If you can't find anything else to do, then maybe go full time instead of reserves?

The Royal Mail sorting office is good if you can get in.

The overtime pays shitloads and they have a very miltant union. I was making nearly £100 a night during the christmas period.

Hm, if the Canadians have a good Postal service jobs you can always do that. I know in America, your pay is crap but you get government health benefits (!) which are really really good.

danyboy27

i have already checked for that, and there is a labor union regulating the postal service, i cant be full time before like 2 or 3 year, beccause it would make my co-worker hangry, all that gardbadge.I dont even mention the fact that you have to be at the same speed of your co-worker, otherwise they gonna report you to your union leader for making you look bad. it may sound extreme but that how it work here, when you work for the governement, you have to join an union, and here they became way too powerful.

When I think of working for the US Postal Service, all I can wonder is if I'd get shot or be the shooter.

Politics aside, joining the military seems like a pretty lazy option. They'll take pretty much anyone, you've just gotta apply. But then what? Are you going to become a career soldier? It might make sense in the short term for the money, but there always other options (and most of the time they'll help you more in the long run)- you've just gotta put effort into looking for and getting them. Particularly coming from a 'leftist' i find this 'ive gotta join the military, it's my only option!' argument to be a little hard to believe. If you really have no desire to serve the ruling class you'll find something better.
