Secondly, why in the name of all things unholy and secular would you WANT to keep Chechnya?? They HATE YOU, YOU HATE THEM!! Get a fucking divorce and get over it, you have nothing to gain by brutally subjugating a people that are willing to give their lives to hurt you back!

They have nothing to gain by attacking Russian targets except their freedom, if you give them that the attacks will end and Russia might be able to get back to the unimportant things like providing food and jobs to it's citizens. But, oh, wait, Putin can't do that quite as easily as he can order young men to their deaths, can he? So why not keep the war going, the people miserable, because at least then it's not his fault, it's "THE CHECHENS!" Be afraaaiiiid, oooooooo....

Imperialist war? The Russians already owned that real estate, al beit through imperial expansion. However, this has more to do with a move towards rapid disentegration, than it does imperial expansion. They are trying not to Balkanize. They especially do not want to lose a region with such a strategic juxtaposition, not to mention the cache of resources.

In addition to those points, Russia does not want to start making concessions to the blood thirsty Islamists. They are as much of a problem to Russia, as they are to the United States. That is what both of these wars are about. We are both facing a old enemy, Gihad.

The Chechen War is horribly imperialist. The Chechen people, civilians, have to go through a large amount of harassment and invasion of their territory, destroying of their homes and killing of their families. It is no wonder that they put up resistance against the occupying Russian army.
The Russian army soldiers have commited hundreds of War Crimes and massacres, they are the bloodthirsty ones. The Chechens are defending themselves and their homes from the fascist army.

Some quotes from Russian soldiers whilst committing war crimes could include:

It was most likely brought on because The World had forgotten the war, no-one seemed to care how many died in the conflict. They have their publicity now, happy?

The first thing Putin did when he was appointed President by Yeltsin was issuing a decree where the former President wasn't liable for any of his crimes committed while in office, thus 1. he admitted that Yeltsin was a criminal, 2. he didn't mind that at all, 3. he made any justice applied to the criminal Yeltsin outlawed. In other words, he prohibited legal prosecution against a major criminal. This alone makes him a criminal. Deal with it. I live in Siberia, an area once invaded by Russians. But what strickes me again, is the fact that Ukrainians are second largest demografic group here- and a great many of them are not descendents of those who came here in the Soviet times, but those who came here right after Yermak actually defeated local khans.
No one calls them invaders, for some reason (while Russians certainly are invaders:))

As for Chechnya, I remember one of their leaders say he was missing the USSR, as there was no inter-national wars there. Funny, isn't it?

Then, there are lots of Chechenians all over Russia who try to control businesses in major cities. Of course, there are also Chechenians who are just peaceful vendors. So I don't think this is the land issue, really, as so many of them live in Russia, not in Chechnya. And don't seem to miss their homeland:)
