I'm not exactly sure what accuracy can be placed on my observations, but the antebellum era in American history (1800-1850s) seems to show that for contemporary commerce to exist, you need large-scale government intervention. States were creating corporations and chartering out roads, bridges, and canals; the states instituted patents. I'd be interesting in learning more about how the state governments acted during this time period in relation to commerce.

I'm going to bump this. It would be interesting to see how necessary government is in providing economics of scale.
