View Full Version : Security Cameras

Today I saw a newspaper article about security cameras being installed and tested out in three cities in my province. This is all in an attempt to "cut down on crime". I'm seeing it as a violation of people's rights to privacy as they will be almost everywhere and constantly on. It also seems like some idiotic right-wing attempt at stopping crime.

Most security camera are never looked at, so they're pretty useless really, they're just insulting and intimidating. And always the state has tried to justify IngSoc by saying its for our safety but they rarely do anything. They dont prevent crime if they're not used, they don't stop it even if they are used, etc. Waste of fucking space to be honest, I normally just put my middle finger up at them. This is coming from the UK, the country with the most CCTV cameras in the world. Fucking joke.

So unless Canada is different, there's really nothing to be worried about?

They have been proven to move crime rather than stop it.

Guide to Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) destruction.
All methods described in this guide have been thoroughly tested in practice.
METHODS OF ATTACK.
3.1) Plastic bag.
Plastic bag filled with glue does the trick nicely.
Cheap and almost as effective as other short term techniques. Use Industrial grade bags which are thicker. Sometimes a camera going into repair will be 'bagged' over, so visually its ambiguous. To Bag a camera theres a high chance that you can reach it with ease. If this is the case dont hesitate to smash the glass, lens and any other components. Dont bag it afterwards, people need to see the units smashed.
Gives clear indication of inoperability.
3.2) Sticker and tape.
Placing of sticker or tape over lense.
Good training activity.
Gives clear indication of inoperability.
3.3) Paint gun.
Use a childs power water pistol with household paint.
Fast, fun and easy method - Highly recommended.
Easy to disable many cameras in a short period of time. a typical one hour action can easily take out 10 cameras.
Carry reserve paint in plastic containers.
Filter paint to remove lumps to avoid blocking gun.
Go for lense first and then cover the rest of the camera and surrounding area.
Clear indication of inoperability, plus draws further attention to the camera.
Camera is easily cleaned so only effective for short time only.
We used super soaker SC 400 - 2000 Edition camoflaged for urban night actions.
With a 50/50 mix of water based house paint (emulsion) and water we could hit targets easily at 4.5m above the ground.
Such a paint mixture totally obscures view through glass lense cover once applied.
Be prepared to get splattered: use disposable clothing.
No climbing required.
3.4) Laser pointer.
Fairly powerful laser pointers can be purchase for low cost (20.00GBP)
Laser pointers of <5mWatt or more can temporarily blind and may even permantently damage cctv cameras.
For garaunteed destruction a more powerful laser would be required.
But hazard of damaging eyes from misdirected pointing or reflection from the camera lense cover.
Also, very difficult to keep laser beam precisely still from any reasonable distance.
Can be attached to binoculars for better aiming.
No indication of in operability of camera.
Would not recomend this method.
3.5) Cable cutting.
Cables can be cut with either a sharp hand axe or garden pruning tools.
Make sure tools are electrically insulated to prevent shock from camera power supply.
Casual glance at dangling cables will reveal that camera is inoperable.
Requires complete costly rewiring.
Satisfying sparks emitted when cables cut.
3.6) Block drop.
Climb to the roof of the building on which the camera is mounted with some heavy weights eg concrete blocks and drop them on the cameras below.
Get correct drop position by dropping small stones first.
Camera will be totally destroyed in a shower of sparks.
Scaling tall buidlings with concrete blocks requires a certain level of fitness.
Pay careful attention to safety of others below.
This is a seriously hardcore method.

My friend's car's window got smashed, and the school security cameras didn't even catch it because his car is just outside the frame.
So good job, whoever set those up. Put them in a useless spot.

I was beaten up infront of one, when I reported the incident (I saw nothing as I was jumped) and mentioned that a CCTV camera was overlooking the area. All I got told was "its not working at the moment".

Ok. These cameras don't seem too bad then if they don't check them, they don't work, etc.
We foiled you, right-wingers! :P

My town installed several cameras in the location me and my "hooligan" buddies hang out, and these cameras seem to be regularly checked for us gathering; When we get into groups of more than 10 the cops start patrolling the area more regularly, or sometimes even park their cars down the street and watch. The police use the cameras only to disrupt any fun we are getting. When fights are about to break out, people leave the place and bash each other's faces in somewhere else. When actual crime happens (A friend's car was broken into and her CDs all stolen, another friend had his long board stolen, and another friend had some kid stab a nail into his tire), the police tell us that they will "send patrols through more regularly" but offer no help solving the problem. I would love nothing more than to fuck with these stupid ass cameras, thanks for the list.
The cameras in my town have cameras watching them, so I think these are the best 2 options for me

A big problem for me is that the city has just kind of randomly placed these cameras in high locations, making some on banks, light posts, and other generally difficult places to get to

The point of cameras is generally not to watch or catch anyone but to give citizens a feeling of a massive all knowing government following them. To some (usually upper-middle class suburbanites) this is a great comfort - all the nasty types are having an eye kept on them and the innocent have nothing to fear. To anyone with a working brain the concept is terryfing. Working or not these cameras do their job of being sinister.

Yeah pretty much. It seems that the aim of the government is to creat some kind of nightmarish panopticon/big brother hybrid using cameras, portable finger print scanners, ubiquitious coppers and all that other shit. Paranoia about brown people and chavs has allowed them to get away with a lot more than they could have dreamed of a few years ago.

From my somewhat totally completely unqualified judgment, it seems like the UK is headed more and more for an extreme authoritarian leadership while the US is headed for a kind of chaotic religious fundamentalist plutocracy
A bright future we have, no?

Under the conservatives, Canada will surely head in that same direction.

The police have put up cameras in Chicago, frequently near public housing and other high-crime areas. Apparently they even use special computer software to automatically monitor for "suspicious behavior." I can see one outside my window it's a little blue blinking light.

All those right-wingers are doing this in their attempts to get "tough on crime" and fight it. I think crime will be here to stay as long as there is poverty. I believe alot of crime is commited as a result of somebody wanting personal gain because they don't already have all their basic needs. For example, somebody may want to commit a robbery because they need money to pay their bills so they can survive.

I think we should start putting cameras into politicians pants to see if they are cheating on their spouses and cameras around rich peoples' computers so that we can stop them from committing white collar crime.
I love that people in this country think spray painting shit on buildings is worse than any shit rich people do. (not that I really care who politicians are fucking)

Haha! Funny you bring that up because according to my friends, i'm Barack Obama's lover. O_O Not quite...
Also, I saw leftist graffitti on a wall awhile ago. I couldn't tell whether it was Anarchist or Commie though. I'm guessing Anarchist because it had that fist logo and an anti-Capitalist thing.

Great book, but it drives me nuts that everyone, including the teachers, say it is "anti-communist" just trying to spread the US ignorant belief that Stalinism is the only kind of capitalism

As I like to say, it's anti-Stalinist, not anti-Communist. ;)
George Orwell himself was socialist so it was the totalitarianism that bothered him about the communist states of his time.
