Never heard of Victor Jara, tut tut.
For those who don't know, Victor Jara was a Chilean theatre director, folk singer-songwriter and socialist who played a pivotal role in the Nueva Cancion Chilena (New Chilean Song) movement which lead to a musical revolution in his country during the progressive government of Salvador Allende. Shortly after the 1973 US-backed coup which ousted Allende and replaced him with the brutal military dictator Augusto Pinochet, Jara was rounded up, tortured, and eventually machine-gunned to death. His mutilated body was later found thrown out into the streets of Santiago. The contrast between the themes of his songs, themes of love, peace and social justice and the brutal way in which he was murdered transformed Jara into a symbol of struggle for human rights and justice across Latin America.
I would highly recommend the Cuban singer Carlos Puebla (1917-1989). Puebla became a supporter of Fidel Castro's 26th of July Movement prior to the Revolution, and was arrested several times under the Batista regime for directly challenging the dictator with songs about the appalling living conditions of the Cuban people. After the revolution, Puebla became a musical ambassador for Cuba, touring the world with songs about his homeland's revolution. His most notable composition was the iconic Hasta Siempre Comandante (Until Always, Comandante), which he was inspired to compose in 1965 after hearing the news of Che Guevara's departure from Cuba. It spoke of his love and hope for Che. Puebla remained loyal to the revolution until his death in July 1989. He is commemorated by a simple a plaque in Havana's Colon Cemetery. It reads: yo soy ésto que soy, un simple trovador que canta ("I am what I am, a simple troubadour who sings")

Shane Macgowan and Billy Bragg, both call themselves socialist and have folk songs about such issues. Billy Bragg has always been heavily assoicated with socialism, him being the fella who wrote and song the recent UK version of The Internationale. Shane MacGowan talks about bastard landlords, the Brits in ireland, racism, fascism and Spain as well as all sorts. He's from the Pogues. Great band.
Ronnie Drew. Clearly a leftie, as seen in 'Free The People'.
