Annouced just over a week ago was the Irish budget , as minister for finance Brian Lenihan called for Irish men and women to be "patriotic" in this time of economic downturn the reaction was quite clear .
Although this seems to be only the tip of the Iceberg in terms of cuts ,it was a deadly one . They introduced that medical cards(http://www.citizensinformation.ie/categories/health/entitlement-to-health-services/medical_card) would no longer be available to all over 70's but only to those who qualify . The next day it hit the papers and covered the news .
On Friday morning the Socialist party (cwi eire) decided to call a spontaneous protest on Saturday to which over 4000 people lined the streets (the same as the 2003 Iraq war demo) protests up and down the country soon followed and by the Monday the government had backed down and said "95% of over 70's would be covered now etc" but this still wasnt enough as over 70's demanded "universal care" and shouted slogans like "bailout the workers not the bankers" the same people who were once the driving support of the ruling part Fianna Fail are not lining the barricades .:thumbup1:
On the Wednesday , ever after all these "guarantees" came , over 20,000 people came to the streets of Dublin and demanded universal care of over 70's . It is said though had the guarantee not being given it would have been 50,000+ .
A shattering blow to this once arrogant government which will make them think twice in the future .:)
I'll add some pics when i find them
