in a communist society... - can you have pets?

i gotta admit i dont really know shit about communism but whats the situation with pets in communism? i have two dogs and one of them is a husky. i have a book about huskies and how to take care of them and such. in the book it says that the commies made huskies pretty much extinct on the asian continent. i can already hear a great number of you screaming about the great american propoganda machine but if you think 'huskies for dummies' is propoganda you need to touch base with reality. but seriously though can you have pets in a communist society?

I have yet to read any thing by any communist against pet ownership, I own seven pets (two iguanas, one uromastyx, and a gorovo lizard, two pugs, and a cat)

Seriously, from what I've read, it is a pretty bad idea to try and keep "exotic animals" for pets. Otherwise, I suppose it's a matter of taste...I've never liked the idea of caged birds and my own cat has a "cat door" and comes and goes freely. I feel sorry for large dogs in small apartments.

I'm pretty sure you could keep pets and if it was my decision at least I would see no reason they would have to go.

Are the huskies wild and not domesticated? I don't know anything about the extinction story but if they are wild it doesn't really apply to "pets" persay.

Dogs are good pets but they're too eager to please and stupid compared to my cat. Although dogs have their advantages as worker dogs (sheep dogs, search and rescue, guidance dogs, helper dogs, dog astronauts and dog brain surgeons)

ps: I have a cat and two guinea pigs.

my rottwieler/black lab mix is plenty smart. he is a good guard dog too. when people hear him bark they get scared. if only they knew the worst he would ever do is lick them. by the way dtc i dont understand what youre talking about.

It is appropriate for you to come to dtc's defense, you know. Dtc is a devoted follower of Mubarak I (his son is being groomed to inherit the presidential throne, sort of like our George II). As an American lacky "by proxy" or "once-removed", you should be defending him. He's exactly the type of quisling that you guys need in the Middle East these days.

Don't worry about his name -- "damn the capitalism" -- he just picked it because he thought it would sound acceptable on a leftist board. Like Mubarak himself, his real name is "I'll do anything for a U.S. dollar"...and I think I can guess what you'll have him do first. :cheesy:

Returning to the subject of the thread, Dirty Jersey, you could well have framed your question in just the opposite terms: "are you permitted to have pets under capitalism?"

Not if you're a working class renter. Look at the apartment ads in any major metropolitan newspaper and you'll see that most of the inexpensive (loosely speaking!) apartments will say "No Pets!". The more expensive apartments will permit them and, of course, if you own your own house, then you usually won't have a problem.

So, like pretty much everything about capitalism, if you have enough money, life is sweet and, if not, even a pile of dog shit to call your own may be hard to come by.
