The borders are still shut and the diplomats have yet to travel, but envoys from Pizza Hut and Burger King have arrived in Iraq.

The two fast food giants set up their first franchises inside the war-torn country, while many aid convoys waited on the borders for the war to officially end.

The arrival of the two restaurants - sited inside giant trailers on a British military base near Basra - won a rapturous welcome from soldiers, whose limited range of rations lost their appeal many weeks ago.

But some officers were less keen on the new arrivals, which are due to start selling food tomorrow.

"I would prefer we got decent showers and toilets sorted out first," muttered one high-ranking officer.

Fast food outlets are common in US bases, including Camp Doha in Kuwait, but it is believed to be the first time they have been sited inside a British military base.

Another officer, who was directly involved in the franchise process, said: "It's an Americanism, we usually have them off the base, but because it is still a war zone we have to give them protection."

Permission to open the restaurants was granted through the Army and they will be run by existing franchise holders from Kuwait, with a percentage of any profits going to charity.

But soldiers waiting for a brewery franchise to be awarded are set for a disappointment, as military chiefs have already vetoed any alcohol being sold on the base, which is home to almost 8,000 British soldiers.

A spokesman for the two restaurants, Atef Bassent, said: "I hope we will do good business here."

Good point happyguy !! I do not buy any McDonalds or Burger King or Pizza Hut of KFC or anything not because it will kill me eventually but because I'm against globalisation of all forms. So whoever is like me please boycott these American franchises.

I never heard of anyone dying of Fast food, if eaten with moderation. It's like cigarettes basically, the more you smoke, the more you are vulnerable to lung cancer or something of that sort.
Nobody's telling you to go eat there 5 times a week.. unless you are planning on becoming obese on purpose.

And yeah, i enjoy eating my home made pizza or burger, rather than shelling over 5 bucks for a meager plastic big mac that could never satisfy your hunger.

True that.

of course it would have to be the two MOST racist fast food joints in america to land in iraq too. between the lucas style, americanized pizza that equates italians and their food with shady, underlit establishments and burger king, home of the "wop"per, the iraqi's are well set to be treated to the crappiest and most racist food available to the world.

Hazard you need to stop it with these crazy conspiracies. Care to explain HOW they're racist. Pizza Hut's atmosphere is surely just a food-marketing technique, and "whopper" is an American slang for "large". I strongly doubt that either of these franchises have racist tendencies. Racism doesn't sell in America... well... I think.

klondike:

surely you don't think that these obvious racist tendencies are nothing but coincidences? and the fact that these same racist fast food outlets being introduced into a nation alrady considered racially inferior by america yet another coincedence? come on. its just basic capitalist word manipulation and indoctrinated racism.

Hazard, can you categorically link pizza hut and burger king with racism?

I oppose fast food and their monopolies and that, but it isn't exactly racist, is it?

Hazard, it's Whopper not "wop"per". And how does a underlit, "shady" establishment give Italians a bad name?

I don't see what these soldiers who have to train like shit to join the army are doing near these places anyway, pizza hut isn't quite so bad, but burger king? why go there?

whopper sounds like wopper. its using a subconcious racist trigger to sell hamburgers.

as for proof, what would you like? a study that compares the stereotypical tendencies of those who prefer whoppers over big macs would prove my point. however, such a study would require the cooperation of both corporations in question and will not be forthcoming. ever hear of the big kahuna burger? or what about the big chief burger? didn't think so. whopper is the same.

pizza hut is cheap, amercanized crap pizza that has helped pushed the petit bourgeois italian pizzaeria's out of business. in my home town, the erection of a pizza hut spelt the beggining of the end for non franchise pizza parlour's in my town. after pizza hut came pizza pizza, then vito's, then 241, and then 341. there used to be about three or four, famly run pizzareia;s now there aren't any. pizza hut is the worst because its a sit in place. it mocks italian values and customs not to give their shity pizza an authentic delivery, but a racist insult to the itlians. in other words, our pizza isn't really pizza, our restaurant isn't really italian, but the cattle herd will buy our food more than yours anyway.

So in other words you offer no proof that Burger King is racist. And how would me hearing the word whopper, think of the ethnic group that it's supposed to be slandering, make me want to eat a hamburger? It seems like a stretch. Did you know that the word whopper comes from the word whopping which most likely has been around longer that the slur you're referring to?

Something exceptionally big or remarkable.
A gross untruth.

If you want to do a study of the two burgers, sit down at both places and ask the people why they ordered a Big Mac when they could walk a block and get a Whopper or vise versa.

About Pizza Hut this is what I get from what you're saying: It seems your grudge about Pizza Hut is way to personal. They seem to be different that your opinion a normal place that serves pizza should be. Don't a lot of pizza places have a place where you can sit down and eat?

Because Pizza Hut has bad food doesn’t mean it mocks Italians, it just means that their food sucks. If I went to a place that served Chinese food and the food was awful I wouldn't be on a rant about how that place mocks the Chinese culture and it people. It just means that particular restaurant sucks.

There was this fish and chips restaurant that sold absolutely crap fish and chips, it also didn't batter them, and worst of all it didn't sell the chips in newspaper!!!!!!

of course being English, I was SO DEEPLY DISGUSTED by this MOCKERY against the English that I threw a FUCKING BRICK through that stupid Fucking restaurant and went after the owner with a fucking baseball bat!!!!!

LOL get real, most Italians I know (and there are a hell of a lot of Italians near me) know Pizza Hut isn't real and leave it like that.
