Nether I've read in Wikipedia, Grolier, Encarta or Britannica. all of them fits the article about life during Stalin's reign, & it could be said as despotic which resists the civil development. Does Stalin's despotism & militais rule has made the Soviet people suffered?
BTW, Since Khruschev's reign were toppled down, the communist states faced te stagnation which leads to the desturction in the 1980s. The BIG question is, what caused the stagnation?

the main reason for the crisis of stalinismis is the lack of democratic control ,by workers, as Lenin put forward, the false idea tha socialism can be created in one country, because the socialism is global alternative to a global system like the capitalist system, this was explained in the Betrayal Revolution by Trosky and a complete history of the causes of the crisis of the stalinism is Ted Grant's book From Revolution to Counterrevolution this analises the collapsed of the URSS

There was huge growth growth during Stalins leadership, which is considered a great feat. What you have stated has no historical reality.
Your comment is just another example of Trotskyist dogmatism. Someone ask a question relating to Stalin, regardless of the question you resort to a Trotkyist check list "1) Mention lack of workers control 2) Mention socialism in one country" and voilą you have the Trotskyist answer to every question relating to Stalin.

Good question. I think you need to go beyond Stalin to answer that. But yes, some would answer that the system Stalin built was terrible and could only fail.

Without any doubt there was huge growth during the soviet Union but this was due to the the plan economy, but if you understand the plan economy you should understand that the way to control the ecomomy is by control of the workers, in the capitalism this control is done in certain way by the market ,.It is impossible to control a modern and complex economy by a group of burocrats, and the creation of burocracy is a process which has its causes in the material condition, and even the most revolutionary party as the bolchevique couldn't avoid it
