I don't think it could have gone much better.

I would say there was at LEAST 200 of us, split off at the top and the bottom of the street.

When the BPP finally did show up, there was only 11 of them - 1 of them was a small child, another looked like he'd popped by on the way to draw his pension, and of course, Kate Dermody looked as happy as ever!

Their protest was small, pathetic and pointless and all they did was prove how idiotic they are - we couldn't hear what they were saying, even with their megaphone - and with us on either side they were completely cut off from all members of the public - so they didnt get to spread their posion to anyone.

Bad points of the day were the police of course - i have a few photos of the police using VERY unncessessary force on people, 1 girl had to be taken away in an ambulance after a male officer punched her in the face...

I have a few photos i'll put up in a minute when i've edited them

CONGRADULATIONS EVERYONE! GREAT DAY!

heres what dermody say's about the day on her blog - i wonder if she was actually there because her version of the 'sucessful event' they held is certainly different from what actually happened!!

_________________

After approximately two hours of delays the British People's Party proudly made their way to HMV in Leeds to protest against the anti-White hip hop CD's distributed by the store. The police were persistently urging us to not go as it was 'too dangerous' but we decided that we were going to attend regardless. It was eventually agreed that we could go at around 1.30pm and we did. We were met with two separate crowds of reds at either end of Lands Lane, both groups were behind barriers and VERY lively but nevertheless we prevailed and continued with our protest. Pete Rushton, Kev Watmough, Frank Walsh and me had our turn on the megaphone and so did Jess aged eleven who demanded White music for White people! The day was absolutely incredible with plenty of reds arrested for public order and not a single Nationalist arrest - we stood shoulder to shoulder like proud men and women and we showed the reds that they will NEVER smash us off the streets of Leeds!! We are going to shortly upload some videos and photo's!!

Well done to those who were there standing up to the red scum - and congratulations to Kev Watmough for an amazing speech!!

@picture: that's the demonstration? :laugh:

A quote from the earlier thread:

McDermody has grovelled and bowed to every demand made by the police, in order to get full protection for herself and the BPP, including throwing them White. The neo-Nazis can’t have their swastika banners, and they’re to keep their mouths shut, and their right arms limp. They must register their attendance in advance, and because they’re so frightened, will come in together from a ‘secret’ RV point, with police protection all the way.
Funny, that's exactly what happens when nazis demonstrate over here. Nice to see that they are becoming more cowardly in Britain as well.

Permanent Revolution report:

Leeds: Protest against fascist British People's Party

Between 150 and 200 anti-fascist protesters assembled in Leeds today, to demonstrate that the British People's Party, a fascist organisation headed by a man recently imprisoned for making nail bombs and downloading child pornography, is not welcome on the streets of Leeds. Initially, there were to be two demonstrations, both closing in on the fascists in a pincer movement, the workers from one side and the students from the other.

As it happened, the fascists appeared to lack timekeeping skills and only showed up to their "protest" (8 of them, including two children, in a pen outside HMV) four hours late. In the mean time, it had become apparent that the main threat to democracy on that day was going to come from the police- they attempted to force the demonstrators into pens, and failing to get the majority of activists in, they brutally broke the protest into parts. Those outside HMV, including myself, were subject to a lot of police brutality. I was punched in the stomach.

When the police had finally moved the forty or so protesters who had managed to stay put outside HMV the longest, it was still several hours of tedium before the tiny fascist contingent moved into their designated pen. They had a rather weedy megaphone that couldn't be heard over our chanting. But still, hiding behind a grand total of 39 police officers, surrounded by many more, and penned in, they managed to look pretty brave. Well, brave for roughly an hour, after which they were sheepishly escorted away by yet more police.

As far as recent anti fascist demonstrations, this one was reasonably successful. The BPP failed to hand out any leaflets, their banners were not visible at all, and their words could not be heard. The fascists were outnumbered twenty to one. UAF and the SWP were largely absent - I spotted 2 of their members in the five hours I was there - and Workers Power's youth group, Revolution, led the demonstration. They did a good job on the whole, refusing to cooperate with police where Weyman Bennett would have been been eating out of their hands and not once suggesting that we should all just sit down.

However, one thing did strike me as bizarre: the number of people, including socialists and anarchists, who innocently questioned why the police were protecting the fascist scum. In doing so, they failed to understand the relationship between the capitalist state and the fascists. They failed to grasp that when there is a strong workers' movement (which of course, we lack in the present day) the capitalists may well turn to fascism as their last option- that, faced with socialism or fascism, their answer will invariably be fascism.

Although the preferred weapons in the hands of the capitalists are the police, the judiciary and the army, sometimes state oppression alone is not enough to suppress a burgeoning workers' movement. Italy, Spain and Germany in the twenties and thirties taught us the exact price that socialists can pay if they fail to take power. And so, the police do not protect us because it is in no way in their interests to do so.

Revolution report:

Neo-Nazi demo shut down in Leeds

Great victory for anti-fascists, 19 October 2008

On Saturday 18th of October, the British People’s Party (BPP) planned a demonstration in Leeds, outside HMV. They intended to protest against “racist” black rap music, handing out leaflets demanding “rights for whites” and calling on the store to stock White Power music. Richard B from Leeds Revo reports.
This was what they planned to do at least… When anti-fascists got wind of it we spoiled the party.

Several hundred anti-fascists turned up, having been organised by Workers Power, Revolution, Unite Against Fascism, Antifa and some other left activists. There were two demonstrations, one marching from the university and the other congregating in the city centre.

The city centre demo marched up to the bottom of Land’s Lane and a few were quickly forced into a pen that the Police had arranged. Some managed to break away, including comrades from Revolution, and join the Uni march as it made its way down.

The Uni group had set off at 10.30am and were soon faced with an attempted police diversion, down a route that would have led to the pen at the bottom of Land’s lane. Had this happened, Land’s Lane would have been clear for the BPP to spread their fascist filth. But we anticipated the police’s plan and pushed through the police lines, forcing our way to the top of the lane. We then moved, together, to directly outside HMV - the exact spot where the fascists planned to leaflet.

We managed to hold this position for around an hour and, whilst a few people got picked off, the main demonstration stayed together, even in the face of the usual police brutality. One young female comrade was hit with a baton so hard in the eye, she had to be taken to hospital.

Just when things seemed to be calm down, one of the head officers in the police came to the front and announced that he would like a few minutes of our time to tell us how to join the Police force. This was, of course, just a diversionary tactic and, sure enough, the police then charged us from behind and began ripping individuals out one by one with brutal force.

Eventually, after a struggle they forced us down Land’s Lane after all. So, now, contrary to the police’s original plan, they were having to block both the top and bottom of the street - blocking any members of the public from coming through. The shops had closed their doors and we had dug in. We had been there since eleven, and it was coming up to half one.

But where were the fascists? Was this about to be a total victory? Were they not even going to dare and show their face?

We kept the chants going, as we had through the whole demo so far - “Fascist Scum, Off Our Streets!”, “Whose Streets? Our Streets!” etc, etc.

All the time we were wondering if the fascists would show.

Sure enough the BPP, at two o’clock - two hours later than advertised - came out.

They got into their tiny little, metal-fenced pen (all 15 of them) and began their demonstration - to nobody at all! There was not one member of the public on that street - just two crowds of Anti-fascist protestors at either end and hordes of police. The fascists had nobody to leaflet or shout at and no black brother and sisters to intimidate.

So there they were a handful of hardcore neo-Nazis, with the police defending their “right” to protest, and an empty shopping area with no one but 300 anti-fascists for company.

We stood strong, drowning them out with chants of “there are many, many more of us than you! There are many, many more of us than you!” and “What shall we do with the BPP, What shall we do with the BPP, What shall we do with the BPP, Early in the Morning? String them up like Mussolini, String them up like Mussolini, String them up like Mussolini, Early in the Morning!”

After an hour, they left through a police cordon with their tails between their legs!

If we had not been there and if we had not pushed through the police lines and occupied the street, the BPP would have had their leafleting and – who knows - could have gained some support, or just shouted their racist slanders at black and Asian people on the street.

As the economic crisis deepens – as mass unemployment looms large on the horizon in Britain – the capitalists are shore to look for scapegoats: Muslims, migrants and ethnic minorities will all be blamed for the failure of the system. History tells us that in times like this fascism can grow into a major threat. That’s why we have to fight to no platform the BPP – that’s why we did it yesterday.

But in some ways the BPP is not the major threat. They are a fringe neo-Nazi outfit with little chance of gaining mass support. We were 100% right to no platform them in their first attempt to crawl out of their hole into public politics. But the big threat are the “nice” Nazis: the BNP. They too will no doubt soon return to the streets as the crisis deepens and have to be treated just like the BPP: driven off the streets by force.

Yesterday’s demonstration shows the anti-fascists can win the battle. But it’s only

Antifa's take on the day:

Yesterday, Saturday October 18th, was the day that Leeds neo-Nazis, in the guise of the odious ‘British People’s Party’, promised to “take back the streets.” They had called a national mobilisation across all fascist party lines, to support their promised “anti- Black Rap music” demo. Monstrous Kate McDermody, the BPP’s Gruppenfuhrer, had even pretentiously quoted from Shakespeare’s Henry V on her vile racist blog, comparing the BPP’s leafleting exercise to the Battle of Agincourt!

What we saw in Leeds yesterday was the reality of the BPP’s attempt to “take back the streets”, a pitifully small ramshackle collection of ageing neo-Nazis, hiding behind a huge police presence, not even close to a member of the public, moaning half-pissed to each other for 45 minutes, then scuttling off like a nonce beneath a blanket.

From the beginning, Kate McDermody had sought the fullest possible police protection for the BPP’s sordid little outing, while simultaneously courting the less legal support of would-be fascist paramilitaries, whom she ended up betraying. The demo was originally announced for October 4th, but when Antifa announced a mobilisation, and the police said they could not guarantee the BPP’s safety, the date was quickly changed to October 18th – the same day as the London Anarchist Bookfair.

At the time the demo was announced, and over several weeks following, there was a great deal of bluster from the BPP, and on the neo-Nazi forums, about how they were going to “smash the Reds” and “take back the streets of Leeds.” As the date approached though, and the antifascist mobilisation gathered pace, it became clear that the BPP and their allies were shitting themselves with fear. Suddenly the fascist internet forums fell silent, all the threats and boasts ended, and all that was left were a few ‘apologies’ from the would-be ‘street warriors’ who could not make it.

While grovelling to the police and bowing to their every whim and request, McDermody had been boasting about trying to start a riot a spark off a “Racial Holy War”. After being warned about her behaviour, she threw them Leeds fascist Tony White, who was arrested for possession of racist material. A similar warning to Adrian Brookes caused the “Racial Volunteer Force” to withdraw, and they were later joined by the Big Mouth of the “British Freedom Fighters”, ‘Wigan Mike’. Previously McDermody’s No1 groupie, ‘Wigan Mike’ is now being openly derided by the BPP as “a wanker”.

By the time of the demo, in return for their protection, McDermody had agreed that she and her pitiful “band of brothers” would be penned in like sheep, would abandon their swastika banners, and would have only 2 leafleters. Now people give out leaflets and hold demos in Leeds all the time, they don’t all go sucking up to the cops to gain protection. Only a cowardly rabble of hypocritical fascist scum would do that.

Yesterday saw a huge police presence in Leeds city centre, with hundreds of cops drafted in to protect the fascist scum, who claim to despise them as “agents of ZOG” (Zionist Occupational Government.) Even the BPP’s RV point had police protection, for which cost McDermody handed them the names and details of all her “comrades”.

The police presence was nothing however compared to the huge number of antifascists who came onto the streets to oppose the BPP and their racist demo. While the BPP sat cowering in a locked pub, the space for their demo had been occupied by those who opposed it, and it took several hours for the cops to clear the way.

Eventually, almost the whole of Land’s Lane and the surrounding lanes and arcades were cleared, with two huge groups of antiracists held back at either end of the shopping arcade. HMV, the site of the BPP’s protest was closed, as were all the other shops on the street, and a sheep-pen barely larger than a phone box was erected in which to contain the brave fascists.

After many delays, and much ‘Dutch courage’, barely visible through and beyond the police lines, and at least 150m from the nearest antifascist or member of the public, came the BPP. They shuffled out of ‘The Ship’, where they had been told they were unwelcome, at least 2 hours late for their own demo, a pitiful collection of ageing neo-Nazis, hiding behind the cops every shambling step of the way. Stooping and slack-shouldered, dragging two children with them as ‘human shield’s, the ramshackle bunch sloped into their sheep-pen, to the massed cries of “Cowards!”, “Scum!”, and much else besides.

The BPP are claiming they managed to mobilise 21 people for their shabby event. Perhaps, to come up with this figure, they counted Frank Walsh’s shopping trolley half a dozen times, and included the two children the cowards had brought along, as well as a few cops. They could well have been penned into a phone box.

Taunted by counter-demonstrators on both sides, laughed at by the people of Leeds, the rag-tag BPP outfit huddled together and no doubt had a good moan about Rap music, immigration, ‘reds’, and the state of the world in general. Not a single fascist leaflet was given out, nor did anyone hear a word the idiots had to say. (They later abandoned their ‘National Congress’.)

It was not long before Kevin Watmough, the little fool who thinks he still runs the BPP, began packing their odd collection of flags into his tatty rucksack, and desperately consulting the cops about how he and his would-be ‘street warriors’ were going to escape. Anxious minutes passed, with Watmough and McDermody looking increasingly desperate. Then, under a heavy police escort, and a volley of abuse, they were rushed through a closed shopping precinct, to an awaiting taxi, driven by an Asian taxi driver. Hiding in the back, the BPP cowards, were driven out of town as far as Headingley train station.

Yesterday was Yorkshire fascism’s lowest point, they showed a level of unparalleled cowardice, and we, the people of Leeds, and our antifascist allies, showed them what a “return to the streets” will mean. That these spineless human rats were able to scurry into the daylight at all was only possible because of their shameless collaboration with the state, and the huge police presence that ensued. That their plans to bring racial hatred back onto the streets was unsuccessful is entirely because of an organised antifascist mobilisation, and the stalwart opposition of Leeds antiracists.

While the fascists struggled to fill a taxi with their pitiful numbers, the number of people willing to come out onto the streets to oppose them was fantastic. Saturday October 18th was another great day for antifascism in Leeds. Thanks and well done to everyone who attended and helped to ensure that neo-Nazis have no place on the streets of Leeds.

here's a few more intellectural comments from Miss McDermody herslef:

''These people are NOT the revolutionaries - we are. We will take back what is rightfully ours. We are the voice of the White working class - they are middle class, idiotic, imbecilic, cretinous pathetic reactionaries. Our time is here whether these rape-supporting, racist-supporting, violence-supporting cabal like it or not. ''

If they are the voice of the white working class - where were the white working class that day? - i'll tell you where they were - they were stood with us. As soon as the public in Leeds saw what was happening and why we were doing it - many of them joined us.

I am white working class, and i am intelligent enough to see that this woman is severly disturbed, and luckily, so are most other people..

for even more giggles read Kate's blog where you can heart tales of the aryan supermens valant deeds,

i liked it,

i especially liked the fact she forgot to point out the fact that about 10 of her BPP supermen couldnt even muster a "fuck off" or a "red scum" when told where to go by one lone antifascist in the town centre, but instead scuttled off tails between their legs while the police rushed to silence the voice of reason,

and the fact that when one of these prime examples of the white race did stray away from the police protection they were soon knocked down to size and made aware that Leeds did not want them, the nazi in question was later seen being escorted onto his train with a copper on each side,

the BPP are a fucking joke yes, but they are still nazi scum who seek to destroy the working classes and who have shown their collaberation with the state, on Saturday they were made aware that the working class will not afford fascists a platform from which to spew their shite,
