I know most of you may not know about Against Me!. For those who do I was woundering what you thought about them and their new material and for those who don't can fell free to comment on it anyways.
Before searching for a former clarity Against Me! was concidered a radicaly leftist punk band with a huge Anrcho Punk following. They were not on a major lable, they were very down to Earth and had a burning passion for their ideals. Once they signed on to Fat Wreck Records (not corperate), they toned down their sound a bit but still had the same beliefs. With their growing popularity they were offered a deal with Sire records. This is were the divide is. They made their new album "New Wave" and lost many of their loyal fans. They dropped their anrachy for more exceptable left ideals like "rocking the vote", drug abuse and antiwar themes. Also they were given the "best album of the year" award by Spin magazine (their an indie mag so its not some synergy thing). As far as I see it their just another rock band that has leftist songs. Its a bit hypocritical but i think their fans abondoning them is a bit much. I had just gone to their concert the other day and i can safty say that the energy was still there, I even saw some anarchist punks there. Please comment and tell me what you think. Thanks for reading.

They suck.
Only good song they made was Baby, I'm an anarchist, and from what I understand they didn't write it. Folk punk as a whole sucks, save for one or two bands.

Who wrote it then?

Pints of Guinness Make You Strong is a good song, but I'm not a huge fan, their music isn't aggressive sounding enough.

Yeah. I don't like folk punk really, though there's some Irish folk punk that I don't mind like Blood or Whiskey.

I recommend that you listen to Reinventing Axl Rose (the album). I HATE most of Against Me!'s stuff, but that album is definitely a classic, considering that it makes the genre of folk punk much more "aggressive" then it typically is.

I absolutely loved this band when I was in high school (roughly 2002 - 2005), as did many in my group of friends. With the release of their second LP (the one after Reinventing Axl Rose... I really can't recall the name right now) most of us lost interest due to various reasons... most of them silly in retrospect, but that's what young punks do: silly shit.
I do think they lost some of the 'edge' (politically/musically) they had back then, though I will admit they can still write some catchy songs. At the time though, to us, musically, lyrically, politically, ethically, they really embodied what a 'diy punk band' was supposed to be. Thus it was difficult to witness them lose many of the aspects that made them once so appealing. It's really quite silly in retrospect, but I know a number of people who felt personally betrayed due to how invested they were in this band... I'll still listen to some of their older material now and then, not only for nostalgic reasons, but also because musically and especially lyrically they're very high quality songs for what they are.
Also, I think the singer/guitarist wrote the song Baby I'm an Anarchist with one of his friends as a quasi-joke... then the band ended up recording it on their LP and started playing it live.

What else is there to say. They used to be ok (as much as folk punk can get), and then turned into sell outs

yeag i agree. I know that they are not the heavyest band around, but w/v. At Seachering for a Former Clarity they lost it. working with fat mike's lable didn't really help their sound. now their just another pop band.
