VIENNA, Austria - A bronze bust of Latin American revolutionary Ernesto "Che" Guevara has been unveiled in the Austrian capital.

The bust shows the bearded Che wearing a beret. It stands 70 centimeters (28 inches) high and was paid for by donations collected by an Austrian-Cuban group.

Vienna Mayor Michael Haeupl unveiled it Thursday in a park along the Danube River.

Critics say the statuette has no place in a public setting because it honors a mass murderer.

Guevara was born in Argentina 80 years ago and together with Fidel Castro led a guerrilla campaign that overthrew Cuba’s U.S.-backed dictator Fulgencio Batista in 1959. He was executed in Bolivia in 1967 after trying to foment a similar revolution there.

The 70-centimetre tall bronze bust is a symbol of Vienna's intention to eradicate poverty, said the city's social democratic mayor Michael Haeupl, according to public broadcaster ORF. To call Guevara a murderer is wrong, Haeupl said. "He was a human," Austrian news agency APA quoted him as saying.
