Motorists will be able to drive for free through all cash booths on Sydney's Harbour Bridge until 6.30am tomorrow after the RTA decided not to replace workers who walked off the job this morning.
Fifty-one toll booth operators and associated workers have gone on strike in protest at the State Government's decision to phase out the three remaining manual cash booths by January next year.
The workers voted to extend a planned one-hour stopwork meeting into a 22½-hour strike after hearing the RTA asked contractors and casual staff to fill in while the meeting was held.
An RTA spokesman said management was unaware the meeting constituted industrial action and withdrew the request as soon as it knew otherwise.
"We wouldn't use contractors to break a strike, as it were," the spokesman said.
The three remaining cash booths will be left unattended for the duration of the strike.
