MOSCOW: Russia yesterday denied reports that it was sheltering missing Iraqi President Saddam Hussein in its embassy in Baghdad.

"This type of claim absolutely does not and cannot correspond with reality," Russian foreign ministry spokesman Alexander Yakovenko said in a statement.

"This is just another attempt to put our Baghdad embassy under threat," he said.

The speaker of the Lebanese parliament Nabih Berri suggested earlier yesterday that Saddam could have found refuge in Russia's Baghdad embassy, as US forces took control of the Iraqi capital.

"Saddam Hussein could have found refuge in the Russian embassy in Baghdad," Berri told journalists, without elaborating.

A convoy carrying Russian ambassador to Iraq Vladimir Titorenko, along with around two dozen staff members and journalists, came under fire on Sunday as it headed out of Baghdad towards Syria. "Any attack against our embassy will be considered as a serious violation of the Vienna convention on diplomatic privilege and immunity," Yakovenko said.

Saddam may have survived a US attempt to kill him earlier this week in a targeted Baghdad bomb attack, Britain's Foreign Office said yesterday. "Did he escape the incident? It is possible that he escaped," the Foreign Office said.

The Guardian newspaper quoted an unidentified intelligence source as saying that Saddam "was probably not in the building when it was bombed."

The Times newspaper quoted a source, also unidentified, who said: "We think he left the same way he arrived in the area, either by a tunnel system or by car, we're not sure."

US intelligence had solid information that Saddam went inside the building and didn't leave before it was struck by an American bomber on Monday, US officials in Washington said.

NOTE'S
****Does it really matter where he is?*****

I mean he is ousted and I'm sure if he came out of hiding he would get one in the skull.
