But didn't he have a left-wi ng, pacifist, liberation theology pastor in Chicago?

Oh wait, he disavowed him all the way and the man only got to say his fill on C-Span, while Obama denounced those oh-so "hateful" soundbites.

It was always entertaining how the media always felt the need to repeat the words "hateful" and "racist" over and over when they played Wright's sound bytes - it seemed to me a concerted effort to keep people from stopping to realize that everything he said was totally legitimate.

He is a dam theocracy not a socialist.

I don't think he would ever claim to be a socialist, but let me tell you something about Barack Hussein Obama...

Just kidding, Obama needs the religious voters and by proposing to expand the faith-based programs that started under Bush, since he feels that the challenges faced today are "too big for government to solve alone," he can court their vote. Religion plays an important role in American politics so it's to be expected.

You cant become president without being very christian, so its no suprise. What did you think, that he was an atheist?

So if you are atheist you cannot be in goverment?

The United States has had one non protestant president, and he was still Christian.
Early in the election he was accused of being Muslim as a negative thing, to counter this, he and his campaign have joined in the craze of using the phrase "God bless (word)" at the end of every sentence. He is another American politician, sleazy as any other, but slightly less evil than his opposition.

If Obama came out tomorrow and said he was an Athiest--he would loose the election.

Dear god, I agree with TomK. America is a long way from ever electing anyone other than a Christian.

It's not surprising, religion is a pre-requiste for a president, as determined by the media and the influential churches. It's the same in Australia, an athiest candidate would be slammed, and likened to Hitler or Stalin as another possible villian athiest.

It's possible that deep down, Barak is not religious.

Like tom said, any candidate that was an atheist, or not christian for that matter, would be guarenteed to loose the election. Thats the sad state of the American people for you.

I think Barrack is not very religious, judging by how easy it was for him to just throw out his old priest

So by law if you are atheist you cannot be in government ?

Nah, you can legally run, but none of these nut jobs will vote for you. You are "Immoral".

That sounds like theocracy than secularism? I thought the founding fathers did not want church and state.

Are Americans more religious now? The UK does not have this problem.

Yeah, it's pretty bad in America. It isn't that there is any legal problems with running, it's just that Americans hate people who aren't christian. (might be a slight exaggeration there).

It's not that the U.S. is "more" but that we never much secularization occurring en masse/quickly.

Although secularization is happening in the U.S. it's very slow compared to Europe.

No, there's no law like that...

I dont know about that, evangelists are growing are they not? At least that is the impression we are getting across the pond.

No shit. It's America, I'm fairly sure both of the atheist politicians are in hiding.

I'm quite interested in why this is, especially since the US was founded on secular principles which are (ostensibly) protected by its constitution. I'm similarly interested as to why Britian (whose nominal head of state is also head of the state religion) is as secular as it is. What is it that causes religion to hold power in the weirdest of places?

Its because Americans are born less intelligent that British people.

Well mostly after 911 religion is growing very strong.Look at the separation of church and state issue in the news ,religious teaching in school ,evolution and creation debate ,prayer in school so on.

And religious remarks in the news on TV and radio. And bumper stickers with religious remarks. And religious gathering with candles so on.

I don't know how it was before but it seems the US is becoming more religious now.Has to what is causing it I do not know.

The government seems more religious now and wanting more religion in the US.The government does not like atheist .

All government do is talk about religious stuff now..

Here is a fun game, watch the last 20 seconds of the speeches at the democrat and republican national convention and count the number of times people bestow a blessing of God upon their audience.

The US was built as a country where different divisions of Christianity would be treated equally, the government even funded a program at one point kidnapping native American children and bringing them into religious schools, Abraham Lincoln had a campaign against him declaring him an atheist which lost him some support, and in the 70s, the US began forcing children to swear their allegiance to "One country under God" daily in their public schools.

Religion has always been powerful in our country, and it is well known that to be a member of the ruling class you must be a Christian.

So the US was never funded on religion out of government ?
