Did you see the 2 videos released today? The one where he's indoors reading is obviously him but who knows when it was done. I believe he made some vague references in this video or another recent one to a black hawk downing. But the shooting down or crash of a helicopter is something that can easily be predicted in a war. So he could have made that tape weeks ago.
The one where he's walking around in the street and everyone is shaking his hand and kissing him is a fake. I don't think he would let so many strangers get so close to him. There have been assasinations or assasination attempts, in such public settings with people around. Ghandi, President Ford (twice), and Governor Wallace are a few that come to mind.
The double looks remarkably close to the real Saddam but you can tell in the eyes it's not him. This double's eyes were too squinted when smiling. Look at the picture of the double in the link at the end. Saddam squints his eyes when smiling but not that much. He wouldn't take a chance of walking around like that with the coallition closing in. I believe he's either dead, hurt, or in a neighboring country. Syria would be my bet.
There are a couple of reasons this double was put out there in public and this video was made.
1)To guage the loyalty and reaction of the public and the military which he isn't 100% sure he can trust when the coallition gets too close. That double went out there with a good chance of being shot. By the way, I'm a firm believer that most people will be nice to a celebrity and be awed by a celebrity. I call it the celebrity effect. For example, most people believe OJ Simpson murdered 2 people and got away with it. However, I'll bet that half of those people will go up to him if they see him in public, and want to shake his hand, take pictures with him, and will say things like "I've been a fan for so long". Therefore the vast majority of those people that were surrounding Saddam were, in my opinion, awed by Saddam's celebrity.
2)In case the double is "assasinated" out there, the killers, wether a lone gunman who's family he killed, or from an attempted coupe, would believe he is actually dead and therefore give up the efforts to kill him. He could then stop putting videos out there for consumption, disapear to Syria if he's not there already, and at least a few of his enemies will think he's dead, thereby reducing the chances of actually being killed.
