They've got some 'progressive' policies, if I remember correctly they want to cap the highest earners and such...

On everything but their main platform, anti-progress environementalism, they're actually quite good. From their website:

The Green Party believes wholeheartedly in high quality public services that are publicly funded, publicly owned and publicly accountable.
The privatisation of public services are opposed by the Green Party.

The notion that unions had unnecessary power stopped being relevant in the 1980s. It is no longer possible for the unions to have too much power. It is a pity that the same cannot be said of unaccountable private companies to whom the taxpayer hands over millions every year. Unions play a vital role in representing many public sector workers, and the Green Party would expect them to play a role in the rebuilding of the public services, including the working conditions of nurses and teachers that any society is dependent upon for health and knowledge.

Best to let them speak for themselves. Go to their website.

They're certainly a socially economic and progresive party. But stanchly liberal.

I remember having a debate with one of them. They were disgusted at the fact that the Socialist Party had supported striking auto-workers. I mean, they were building cars for fucks sake! don't they know how polluting those things are! Bloody workers.

Other than that they're in favour of human rights over tighter policing, lesser surveilance, more social spending, wellfare, defending the NHS, encouraging green public transport etc tec.

None of their policies are particularly offensive. But they're not particularly effective either. And in no position to ever imlipent them.

A reactionary, neo-Malthusian party which represents the petty prejudices of the middle classes. They wish to attack working class living standards and prevent development.

They also openly call for greater policing of working class life: 'Community policing through Safer Neighbourhood Teams round the clock not just at certain times of the day.' (from their statement in the Mayor of London and London Assembly Elections booklet)

Overall, the GPEW certainly isn't a socialist organisation, but there is a significant current within it - the "Green Left" - which includes people like Derek Wall, who is both a marxist, and was until recently the elected "principle male speaker" (there not being a position of "leader" or "president")

Derek's blog: http://another-green-world.blogspot.com/

Worth taking the time to delve a bit deeper. Derek's books are also worth a read, if you can find them...
