One of Silvio Berlusconi's players at AC Milan has declared he is a fascist. Christian Abbiati, 31, an Italian international, said: "I am not ashamed to proclaim my political beliefs. I share [the] ideals of fascism, such as the fatherland and the values of the Catholic religion."

The goalkeeper's remarks, published today in Sportweek magazine, come amid debate over Italy's fascist past and rightwing present under the leadership of AC Milan's billionaire chairman.

The minority partner in Berlusconi's parliamentary alliance, the Freedom People, is a party spun out of the country's neo-fascist movement. Some members remain unabashed apologists for the dictatorship of Benito Mussolini.

The defence minister, Ignazio La Russa, sparked a row this month after he paid tribute to Italian soldiers who fought alongside German troops in the second world war. His comments came after the mayor of Rome, Gianno Alemanno, told a magazine he did not consider fascism an "absolute evil". Berlusconi dodged a question on his own views, replying: "I think only of working to resolve the problems of the Italian people."

They are all coming out of fucking hiding now that Italy's actions against it's ethnic minorities has set a dangerous "acceptable" standard.

in the same week, anti-fascist leftwing AFC Ajax defender Oleguer Presas (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oleguer_Presas)(ex-barca) heard that the state asked a two year prison sentence against him for his involment in a small riot with the police around a squated socialcenter in barcalona.

Luckily, under Spanish law, first offenders don't actually have to go behind bars if the sentence is less than 2 years. I like Oleguer, although he hasn't had a great start for Ajax. Players like Oleguer are great to have on the pitch, especially compared to morons like Salvador Ballesta.

As for Abbiati: can't they import Stephen Hunt to Italy to fucking knee him in the head, so that he has to walk around with the same stupid helmet as Petr Cech? I'd pay to see that.

And the media storm over this is where?

I am glad he is able to say that he is a fascist. However I am very scared at the lack of response or rebuttal.

Yes, the distinct lack of people kicking him in the teeth concerns me as well. Hopefully that will be addressed soon.

That seems sort of irrelevant. I can't think of any ideals of fascism that are the least bit appealing, rational, or acceptable.

more fascist footballers, Paolo Di Canio, former Celtic, Sheffield Wednesday, West Ham and Charlton striker, now lazio rome (whel, he should feel a lot more at home there than at celtic and the hammers): http://findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_qn4158/is_/ai_n15916263

Italy has more clubs with "right wing" [fascist] ultras than "left wing" ultras.

Dont know what the overall ratio is but Lazio is not the only club with fascist friendly crowds. Di Canio became a fash after spending time standing on the Curva Nord, and seeing how many clubs with formerly "left wing" fan groups are becoming the home of apolitical or even fash group [AS Roma is a good example] I dont think this player will be smacked around by antifa hools anytime soon.

When fans from all clubs held demos and rioted against police stations after the police shooting of a fan last year they sure as hell didnt yell out any left wing slogans, more the opposite if my friend in Italy is correct.

Matteo Sereni, Daniele De Rossi, Gianluigi Buffon and Cannavaro are all also players with fascist symphaties. Di Canio was attacked by irriducibilli because they thought he was not fascist enough. a good example of a leftwing footballer is oleguer presas (now unfortunatly Ajax) he's catalan and supports the squatter/anti-globalisation movements, refuses to play for the national team and is standing trail soon for taking part in riots after the closing of an alternative bar in barcelona.
