View Full Version : Guilty Pleasures?

While I don't exactly hide my musical tastes from anybody, I think most people would say that a few of my choices are unacceptable for a 20 year old guy to listen to, so I'm not sure if my picks constitute as guilty pleasures exactly, but whatever.

Well, I love Anna Karina...really. I love her movies and her music, and she has a really odd voice which grew a lot more huskier as she aged but I still like it.

dtlO0RXktlo

Zooey Deschanel's band, which is really poppy but I was hooked on this album for a while.

Much like Anna Karina, I love Francoise Hardy. Listen to the song and you'd understand why.

Okay, honestly, I don't listen to this guy to be ironic or funny, I really think this is good music. The opera and new wave fusion is just too awesome to put into words really, though I wish he was still alive. :(

Your turn.

Well, I'm not sure about the last video you posted, but the first three are all excellent - nothing 'guilty' about that at all.

There's no guilty pleasures as far as music. If you like it, shout it out with pride. I freely admit to liking Britney Spears and Chrisitina Aguilera, both of which are technically in far poorer taste than what you presented.

I think it's more fun to have one "really good music" channel and a "pop channel" or "trash channel" in your mind. Anything that you know is cheesy but you still really like for some reason, simply say "that's just my anything goes channel".

from my ipod:

Genesis - misunderstanding
Inner Circle - Bad Boys (yea, the Cops song)
Journey - 2 songs
Kool & The Gang - Let's go dancin (Ooh la, la, la)
Sheryl Crow - Soak up the sun
Smokey Robinson - Cruisin'
MxPx - a whole album

not too bad I guess. But this has made me want to post in a thread listing the 10 coolest songs from my ipod. There are a few songs in there that I have a burning urge to share with the world.

I have a soft spot for cheesy disposable 50s/60s girls (groups) like The Ronettes, The Shangri-Las, Little Eva and their ilk.

Also I got some songs by The Monkees, Ricky Nelson and Roy Orbinson.

According to some of my buddies Wuthering Heights by Kate Bush is a no-no, I dont really agree.

Roy Orbinson

guilty?? not really

I hope not.

Also to the OP, there's nothing wrong with Klaus Nomi.

I agree, nothing wrong with what I or anybody else listens to, but I don't think most people understand that I enjoy the stuff I've posted. They either look at me weird or in the case of my brother, tell me to "turn that shit down."

I really dig Klaus Nomi though, his videos make me smile.

"Satan Is Real" and "Power In The Blood" by the Louvin Brothers. You can't beat a bit of evangelical Christian bluegrass.

New rule: restrict anyone who likes Paris Hilton or Rush. If that's not supporting right wingers I don't know what is.

Lyrically Rush is pretty lame, but musically they have some great moments.

1. Death Cab are amazing and have released one of the albums of the year. Going to see them in November, can't wait.

2. Please don't use the 'gay' as if its somehow a bad thing.

Klaus Nomi is fucking amazing and don't let anyone ever convince you otherwise

It's not really a guilty pleasure but I feel kind of guilty for liking post-rock because it makes me feel both pretentious and like a dilettante. Pretentious because it is, a dilettante because I am not really a fan, I just like to listen to it, but the fans are exceptionally fanatical.

How is Rush a guilty pleasure?! :(

My guilty pleasures include Kylie Minogue - Locomotion, ABBA (an ABBA greatest hits CD was the first CD I ever owned, and I'd stay up late after I was supposed to be asleep listening to it over and over again :blushing:)
I have been known to listen to Hoedown by Emerson, Lake and Palmer on repeat.

Oh, and Freedom Call. Especially the song 'Metal Invasion'
Seriously though fucking listen to it, it is a fucking great song.

According to some, the entire power metal genre should be considered a 'guilty pleasure', and I am a power metal fan. Helloween is awesome. Now they are a band with cringeworthy lyrics. (Edit: Future World, anyone? That actually is one of my favorite songs. Since people are posting YouTube videos ... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CTDHfu9ThhE)
Oh haha and I really enjoy the Annihilator album 'Set the World on Fire'.

I also like listening to the Hairspray soundtrack occasionally
...I have quite a few guilty pleasures.

is womanly a better sounding adjective? i don't know, i can't help but feel death cab is very feminine sounding.

Um, because they're crap - and neo-fascist crap at that.

Music is for everyone, it doesn't divide us into groups based on gender or sexual lines. Do you somehow think its 'womanly' because Ben Gibbard sings a lot about his emotions?

If any sort of adjective is used, I would say Death Cab are quite depressing. Not a bad thing in my book :)

Rush makes for some fun soundtracks on nostalgia movies about the 80s and makes okay arena rock for a phase in your teenage years, but they don't contribute much musically and their songwriting can be inane. Instrumentally Geddy Lee and Neil Peart are impressive and YYZ is a neat little jam (the first few times you hear it) but they have little staying power and soon fall to this nadir of "gimmicky but not fun enough to be camp".

As far as "womanly", there is definitely "*****" music (for wusses...ie Fall Out Boy), but there is nothing wrong with "woman" music: Heart, Fleetwood Mac, Janis Joplin, Ella Fitzgerald are all kosher in my book.

I was a little confused by what you said, so I googled "rush band neo-fascist" and came across this: http://www.adequacy.org/stories/2001.8.22.0219.37804.html

Just say 'whiney' or 'self-pitying' cause that's probably what you mean as far as Death Cab. This has nothing to do with gender or sexuality, of course. There's plenty of badass girls out there who will kick your ass any day. Likewise, gay men.

they're not a bad band by any means but i can't help but feel weird when i listen. i know it's irrational and doesn't make a whole lot of sense. new album is awful btw. transatlanticism is by far the best album by deathcab.

Lies, its the best they've done since Transatlanticism and is nearly as good as that and their best album, We Have The Facts And We're Voting Yes.

Although it is ideologically impure, at times I find pop and rock music such as material by Abba, Madonna, etc fun to listen to.

Don't worry, "there's nothing wrong with a bit of beat music, as long as it's reasonably cultured and not just savage 'yeah yeah yeah' shouts" (Erich Mielke, Minister of State Security of the German Democratic Republic).

You might be into this, Velior: I own the original 1985 Bulgarian vinyl of Madonna's 'Like A Virgin' on Balkanton, the state-owned record label. I'm very proud of it. The carboard sleeve feels a bit rough compared to what we're used to in the capitalist zone these days, but they were open-minded enough to translate the album title for the Bulgarian people: Kamo Geba.

I like quite a bit of "happy hardcore", which is probably one of the most annoying offshoots of electronic music that exists.

Lately I've been listening to nothing but the "Bonkers 17" album.
