a genius. his material is still amazingly relevant today, especially his take on the war on drugs, american imperialism, christian fundamentalism and sexuality. the last i heard his manager kevin booth was making a film entitled "american drug war". i don't know whether it's finished or not.

Not a genius, did the same material for 15 years. With that said, he was a decent comedian that made you think instead of waste your time with pithy jokes. That film you're talking about "american drug war" is already out, and it's pretty decent.

It's only a shame he didn't live to rant about contemporary politics. There's a comparison when Alexei Sayle said of Thatcher "we left-wing comedians knew that here was a monster who would make us all very rich".

yeh he's definetly my favourite stand up comic the movie is apparently going to star russell crowe as Hicks which disgusts me

By far my favorite comedian.

Excellent comedian and it's a shame that what he had to say in the 80s is relevant to today. You would think we'd learn from history, but it just keeps repeating.

My favourite comedian, he was an incredible comedian and social critic, he opened audiences eyes and gave a perspective I had never heard before, and he was right, on pretty much everything he said, quite similar to Lenny Bruce, both great comedians

Alexei Sayle laughed on a documentary recently at remembering how he used to think Albania was a workers paradise.

Bill Hicks was quite funny. I never got Alexei Sayle, though.

In Arizona Bay, doesn't he refer to the UK as a "Socialist nightmare" :rolleyes:?

What do you mean at the time Thatcher was in power?

And Alexei's great: he had a sketch where the democratic process was sticking your head in a bucket of something revolting.

Yeah, Ben Elton was a big critic of Thatcher back then too. Funny how quiet Alexei Sayle is these days about politics.

At least he didn't do a shitawful 'topical' show on ITV! Or write a string of horrifically inflated satire books.
ALEXEI = WIN
ELTON = FAIL

Oh yea, I think he's still pretty left-wing. Did you watch the first episode of his Liverpool series?

Heh, he was talking about his being offered to do a commercial for "Orange Drink".

Hicks: "Yeah you really got my act down good, guys. That'll be great. You know, when I'm done ranting about elite power that rules the planet under a totalitarian government that uses the media in order to keep people stupid, my throat gets parched. That's why I drink orange drink."

I don't think he ever lays all of his politics out there in an entirely cogent manner, but I still love him. He is generally "leftist", but with a bit of an anarchist bent... though likely far too cynical to ever call himself one ;).

He actually had called himself an anarchist once.

When?

Bill Hicks called himself 'Chomsky -- with dick jokes.' He advocated a lot of reforms and solutions that would help the homeless, the downtrodden and the lower class of society. He was a visionary, that's for sure.

I reckon he would have been an aanrchist if you tried to pigeon whole him but he wouldn't have described himself as anything too openly, though apparently he did once.

I didn't know that he ever referred to that so specifically. Time to go google hunting, I guess.

Bill Hicks is the godfather. If you like him but feel you can take some slightly more offensive (by that I mean very offensive) material, check out Doug Stanhope who works for Hicks' company Sacred Cow. Stanhope is my favourite living comedian and at times very reminiscent of Hicks. He's big on his politics and loves mushrooms to an unhealthy degree :)
