View Full Version : I Walk Alone

So, I was driving home today (after a long hard day of oppressing the Proletarians--hey, they don't oppress themselves!) and listening to Green Day's "I Walk Alone" on the radio. I'm following this car--and when we stop for a light I see the bumpersticker of --get this, CHE. It's about the size of a baseball card and there are multiple images of Che, some in what looks like Blue and some Tan or Orange.
And THAT was the closest I've ever come to a REAL Communist in real life.
I have never knowingly met another Communist.
So curiously--do you Communist know, or have you met, or associate with other Communist? Or is RevLeft your on stop for all your Communist needs?

I know anarchists(to what degree their knowledge lays I don't know) and there's a group of people I disparagingly refer to as the liberal club, but I don't know any marxists, sadly.

I met a Marxist on a plane ride once. She was pretty cool, as I remember.
I know anarchists, but I had to seek them out. I've never really met a radical by chance.

Indeed I did. I met him at Smokey Mary's (The Episcopal Church of St. Mary the Virgin on West 46th St in NYC.) Must have been 25 years ago. A friend of mine invited me to an "invocation" by him and (Episcopal) Bishop Spong--for something that I don't quite recollect.
I stand corrected.

DAMN. I, of course, was kidding. though she is a "babe."
Are you in that movie? You don't have to say which one.
[Edit] You are right, Demo! I Googled the name and that's her!

Looks aren't everything, I am afraid Tom, she is not a very pleasant person I am afraid to say.
Anyway I realise you were joking but seeing as I actually knew who it was, how could I resist?
At any rate, I am not in the video. It was taken around the time I was forced to come to the unhappy conclusion that I could not in good conscience remain part of that party while it engaged in the behaviour it chose to act in.

Yup, through the Socialist Party.
I think you've got an impression of us as armchair socialists, Tom. Revleft is just a debating forum. There is an entire left-wing movement out there.

I really see that from what you and Demo and comrade Joe have said--Britain is a completely different world from that inwhich I live.

Being newer to the movement I've begun attempting to seek out others, but there isn't much hope for a lone anarchist/commie here in central Washington. I have a friend who is involved in community work in Seattle that knows of some organizations, which would give me yet another reason to consider moving to that part of the state.
At the moment I've convinced some friends to look into my political belief, the results of which have been fairly successful so far, so I guess I'm active...gotta start somewhere right? ;)

One of my co-workers was communist. We used to talk about politics and various subjects. This was about 20 years ago.

I've met quite a few socialists, only one who called him self a Marxist, a couple that call themselves Anarchists (I don't count the ones that do it as more of a cool thing and stop once their bored with it). A lot more that were socialist thinking, but did'nt put a label on it.

I'm part of an organization that promotes direct democracy above representatives; recently we had some success in preventing the construction of a Starbucks near the local college campus. Outside of direct democracy the group isn't ideological, but most members are socialist. You get a nice perspective of Marxists, anarchists, and social democrats. They've worked pretty much in harmony. I've also met quite a few non-socialists who find a lot of common ground in Marxism, but they still flirt with American liberalism. For Texas our local campus is pretty "left."
Although we recently had a big hoopla over Ron Paul, but that died out in a few weeks...

TomK had forgotten he'd written it as part of his RPG here.
It reminds of that old saying - "it's easier to tell the truth because there's less to remember."

No would would ever in a million years see me in the grocery store and say "there goes a socialist". I usually wear college t-shirts, shorts, and sandals. My hair's not long either.
This last summer I went to a "How Class Works" conference at SUNY-Stony Brook and met lots of radicals/Marxists who didn't look it. One I remember was a middle-aged Japanese nurse who had just started reading Marxism on her own out of curiosity, until she became a Marxist a year or so later. Another was an M.D./Ph.D--I think he worked as a neurologist.
Nader got ~3 million votes in 2000, despite relentless attacks and attempts to marginalize him by the Dems, so that should give you some kind of a benchmark idea just how many people are dissatisfied with both major parties from the left. I would not be surprised if a good percentage of these people knew enough about Marx to have an informed opinion about him--it's pretty natural to eventually check out Marx when you're unhappy with capitalism. Also, the Borders bookstore by my house always seems to have 3-4 Marx-Engels Readers in stock, along with about 10 other M/E books (not all Manifestos). Obviously someone's buying them.
I don't talk politics with most people I meet and would never know if I had met a Marxist. Statistically speaking, however, it is a certainty that I have met quite a few radicals without knowing it.
(and yeah, I've also knowingly met a few under totally random circumstances like a party).

Yep. Keep in mind that there are more registered Greens and independent left-wingers even in America than there are right-wing fascists like the American libertarians.
The history of the socialist movement in the US is rich and deep; I've also made a thread on this forum noting the contributions of some libertarian-socialists alone to humanity.

it sounds like a take of the che image in some sort of andy warhol inspired parody.
In this country a few years ago you would see trendies walking around with hammer and sickle or cuba hoodies as some sort of fashion statement. It probably wasnt a commie you saw, it sounds more like to me what you call post modern irony.

All told--no doubt true. Here in Florida (USA) Communism (Fidelism) is muchly the EVIL for most of the exile Cuban Community--I was suprised to see the Bumper sticker at all.
There was also an Obama bumpersticker on the car--so your may be right after all.

Well in my area, Cuban defened Fidel. It is a myth that all Cuban here are against Fidel. My stepfather is a Cuban and also defended Fidel. You just a lazy middle-class who stays at home doing business.
