So has anyone heard the new album yet & what's the verdict?
I only think their first three were really good, so I'm not putting my hopes up high. But who knows.

all i have heard from their new album is "The Day That Never Comes", which was a pretty good song in my opinion. it was like 8 minutes long, with alot of tempo changes. i look forward to hearing more.

What do you think of the video? It's quite ambiguous.

It seems they are trying to convey the alienated, helpless feeling of serving the US military in the Iraq war. the soldiers all want to go home, but that's "the day that never comes". all in all, it wasn't a bad video (it surprisingly wasn't very violent as i would come to expect with a video like this) but yes i agree it was quite ambiguous.
edit: heres a good video containing previews for all of their new songs. it seems like they have a nice variety going with this new album.

Are the Cavalera brothers in Sepultura? I never really liked them for some reason. Wait, I did like 'Arise' for a while, but then I heard Earth A.D. and thought it was dull.

Maybe you're right. I guess they can't go over the top too much with anti-Iraq war messages since I imagine they have a lot of support in the army and also from the more 'patriotic' elements in US society. Perhaps that's why they left the video a bit ambiguous.
What I find admirable is that the Muslim couple in the video is not depicted as evil monsters, but as scared human beings. You could even say that they've been sexualised to some extent: they're both pretty attractive, you can tell that despite the veil etc... which, from an American music video mentality point of view, means as much as saying "they're good people".

'The Day that Never Comes' is not a great song and it is far cry from their eighties efforts. The album will thus be probably disappointing. Generally bands riht their best stuff at the start of their career and that is why they come to the public attention. Metallica haven't written anything great for 20 years now.
I only think their first three were really good,
I think no. 4 'And Justice For All' is an outstanding album.

Oh yeah, true - I forgot that one. I don't like the Black Album though, and I can't remember liking much of what I heard after that one.

For me, Metallica's first four albums, from Kill 'Em All to ...And Justice For All are the best. Now, Hetfield's country-like vocals along with the steel drums make me cringe.

Eh, I think they were just trying to create the classic "Fade to Black", and it was a poor attempt.
EDIT: I've listened to it again. It's actually a pretty fucking awesome song. Disregard the statement above.

I just downloaded it this morning and haven't gotten through it all yet, but it seems alright. Definitely better than St. Anger, but of course they'll never be as good as they were in the 80's. Master of Puppets is pretty untoppable.

I thought it was a fairly solid album. I'm suprised that Metallica could still play a bit more of a thrash-esque sound, thats pretty decent. I'm impressed with how Rick Rubin was able to pull it off working with Metallica.

They are both out now.
Heard a bit of the new Metallica album, doesn't really rock my boat and im not gonna waste time on a band just because they many many many years ago made groundbreaking albums

They have billions to produce music, you'd think they'd come up with something magnificent... But then again, creativity has nothing to do with wealth. Although it can occasionally occur despite of it. Metallica is just old and boring in my opinion.

Not really. The Stones wrote some of their best songs when they were filthy rich. When they were poor, they just covered old blues songs.

To quote Sunn O))), "I Dream of Lars Ulrich Being Thrown Through the Bus Window Instead of My Mystikal Master Kliff Burton".
Also, what would be the response, just out of curiousity, if people on this thread were complaining of Hetfield's "nigger voice"? What's the difference in using "redneck" as a pejorative?

Metallica died under a bus is Sweden in '86.
Comrades, heed my words of wisdom!
Anything since 1991 (their black album) has been shit.
There stuff before 1986 was fucking GODLIKE, this was because their bassist (Cliff Burton) was alive and was the main contribute to their amazing compositions.
1983 Kill 'Em All
1984 Ride the Lightning
1986 Master of Puppets (Cliff Burton dies after this)
1988 ...And Justice for All
1991 Metallica (Metallica's black album, anything after this isn't any good.)
1996 Load
1997 ReLoad
2003 St. Anger
2008 Death Magnetic

The Black Album can't be compared to the first four, they abandoned thrash for hard rock at that point. And "Enter Sandman" is terrible.

If Load and Reload had been combined into one album, it would've been just as good (maybe better) than the Black Album. Even seperate, they still both have their charm. People give them way too much shit for their post-Justice records. They'll probably never have the fire of those first 3 or 4 albums ever again, but to dismiss the whole gamut of the 'new Metallica' is stupid. I thought Death Magnetic was pretty tight, and I'll put my neck out there and say that St. Anger isn't nearly as bad as people claim (definitely there worst, but I still understand it).
If all goes according to plan, I"ll be seeing them this fall.

I seen them in March and they played 6 songs from the new album. Apart from that they are still brilliant live. Metal legends.
