I recognize their influence, which is considerable.
But I don't like them.

I dig 'em.
I thought Nevermind was a little overproduced, like Kurt himself said, it's more like Motley Crüe sound then a punk sound.
Wich is why I perfer Bleach or In Utero.

yes he is a 'punk rock Jesus' in the exact meanings of those words, a martyr to the fucked up MTV, producers and big cash music scene and a rebellion against it as well,
my favourite band since i was but a boy:tt1:
i love Nevermind as well, the band has a lot of pop undertones all the way through and this album personifies it, by no means do i hold it any higher than anything else he did tho, i love them all the way to Do Re Mi

As far as grunge goes, Nirvana pales in comparison to the epic grunge gods that are Mudhoney.

True Mudhoney is made of win, I also dig Green River and Tad.
The album Sub Pop 200 is worth checking out for alot of great grunge songs.

No, I always hated them. To me, they sound like The Police with distorted guitars.

I used to like them when I was 12, but since discovering the bands that actually did create and influence this type of sound, I can't really understand why people cling to the idea that Nirvana is creative or original (or even good), but I've never been a music elitist and if people like them, it's all good. To be honest, I can't listen to one of their songs for more than a minute before I change it to something else.

I didn't when I was 13, but I sure do now. I haven't sat through a Nirvana song on the radio in at least 4 years.
edit: did not read plagueground's post before posting, I swear.

In my opinion, a lot of people that say they "hate" Nirvana are just egotists trying to sound profound and different. silliness.

I don't like most of Nirvana's work. Bleach was nicely raw but immature, Nevermind was a commercial mix of dirty punk and pop rock. In Utero wasn't too bad: it was mature, yet deeply anchored in grundge with approximative and atonal riffing at some place (which is a good thing). But still, it isn't what I like the most.

i voted yes, they were never my favourite band as i am into hardcore punk, but i liked them at the time and still enjoy them now. they have their place in music history.

Funny what conclusions people draw if you can't stand something they like. What if their music simply makes me nauseous?

a lot of people
That doesn't mean everyone. Some people just don't like sounds, but I think that plenty of people overkill how much they dislike the sound to make a statement.

Maybe it's because they had to live through an era when you just couldn't escape Nirvana. I have no problem saying I like some ABBA songs, but if I say that to someone who grew up in the 70s, they want to lynch me (unless they were ABBA fans).
What also annoys me is that simplified narrative that gets shoved down our throats all the time: in the 80s and early 90s there was *nothing* but hair metal, until one beautiful day *Nirvana* came around and saved music. When I hear people parrot that, I usually go "at least hair metal was fun, which is more than you can say about that whining junkie Kurt Cobain whom people took way too seriously".
It's the same when you turn on the TV and you've got another old punk saying: "in the 70s there was *nothing* but progressive rock, until suddenly one day the Sex Pistols emerged out of the blue and everyone lived happily ever after." It makes you want to go: "actually some progressive rock was really good" just to shut them up already.
So yeah, I admit that my feelings about Nirvana are to some extent influenced by the culture that surrounds me and the fact that I'm sick of their *importance* and *greatness*. I think it's hard to be 100% objective - you're always influenced by factors other than the music itself, especially since rock and pop culture work on more levels than just one.
But equally truthfully, I could simply never stand their music, their melody lines, or his voice. Nirvana do make me nauseous, although their unplugged cover of The Man Who Sold The World was rather good. And whether I like them or not, I think they are just massively overrated. Why were they hyped at the time and not some other, perhaps much more interesting alternative rock band (the Butthole Surfers, for instance)? I think talent is not the sole factor here.

Lol, I always use that analogy about him being the 'jesus of music' (refering to the debatable act of martyrdom) to piss my friend off, he believes that Nirvana is overrated.
As for me, I agree with him about Nirvana being overrated but i think it doesn't detract from the experience of listening to their music. As for judging the band itself, well i think it was a decent band, nothing compared to Queen in my opinion

I went through a Nirvana stage in 8th and 9th grade where I worshipped them (as in their punk songs).
Then I realized that on top of Cobain going out like a ***** (as previously stated), he sucked at guitar (not to mention he was consistently listed as top 20 guitarists among suck as Hendrix, and Clapton, always above Iommi, Jeff Loomis and Mikael Akerfeldt.... this was a time when I was starting to learn guitar and listening to bands and artists who actually knew some sort of musical theory), he was a fake as far as "anti-corporation" beliefs. There came a time where he demanded 98% of the bands' profits, leaving Grohl and Noveselic with 1% each (no, I will not take drugs as an excuse for this), and that overall, they just started sounding less and less interesting to me until it was just far too refined for the whole "punk" thing. Not to mention them being played out as hell.
In short, no. I don't, but I respect others' opinions on them (unless, of course they bring up "Smell Like Teen Spirit").

I adore Nirvana, and I owe them my ability to accept my sexuality (as a 14 y-o reading heavier than heaven, I learned they did alot of gay benefits). Furthermore, Grunge was possibly the most socially enlightened musical subculture. Seeing this made me put on In Utero, by far their masterwork.
But you could've maybe clipped Teen Spirit from the youtube list.

How so? And was it really a socially relevant subculture when even Chelsea Clinton was a grunge kid?

I was a performing classical musician from age 5 to 22, didn't hear much pop until 1999, but when I did I fell hard for the music of Nirvana and Pixies. Love them or hate them, there's something there.

I don't detest them or anything though. It's just another band,IMO. Maybe a little over-rated

Not that musically talented..
Not that lyrically talented...
Not that creative...
Really not that good at all...
BUT, with that said, they did have a huge impact on music during their time and I acknowledge their influence.

I think Pearl Jam is all around a better band and influenced the grunge era just as much. Also, their music has been continually good and they have kept up with the times (unfortunately impossible for Nirvana, but Dave Grohl turned out to be a good front man and the Foo Fighters are pretty good). Nirvana isn't bad though.

I liked them when I was 14 or something... but then I found them very repetitive and boring.
They basically took what they knew from The Melvins and bastardized it.

In Utero is a velvet wank of an album. The socially enlightened comment was based on when I read Heavier than Heaven - they did alot of gay and pro-choice benefits, and because grungers had done away with the whole mottley crue chicks and dudes attitude. On the part of Kurt Cobain, he was reacting against growing up in a backward inbred shithole. If you ask TAT what the town of Goole is like, or Scarlet Ghoul what Attleborough is like, you'd understand my admiration for that.
