For quite some time now, I've had reservations regarding the term "commodity fetishism (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Commodity_fetishism)." Lots of people don't know the broader meaning of the word "commodity," limiting their perception to gold, oil, and "the commodities markets."

On the other hand, "consumerism" puts too much blame on the "sinner" and not on the "act" (consumption):

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Consumerism

Opponents of consumerism argue many luxuries and unnecessary consumer products are social signals allowing people to identify like-minded individuals through the display of similar products. Some believe relationships with a product or brand name are substitutes for healthy human relationships lacking in societies and along with consumerism are part of the general process of social control and cultural hegemony in modern society.

Would consumptionism or consumption fetishism be more modern terms?
