Apparently the police wouldn't let them take the stage at the RNC so they performed an a capella,

Peaceful opposition? Fuck that. RATM's music is incredibly boring and preachy as shit.

And then they were escorted by a police caravan straight through the march...

If you ever needed any proof that rage against the machine wasn't about the music, this would be it.

It's quite nice of them to take a break from selling their $14.99 CDs to do this.

That's right.

Artists have got to starve, after all.

They said they signed with the most politically accepting label they could. They want to preach to the masses not the converted. That's why they choose a mainstream label. Maybe if they make new stuff, who knows.

For Rage to use independent labels is like Chomsky disallowing Borders to carry any of his books and telling his fans to find an independent bookseller in New York City for their political needs.

Plus this

...Artists have got to starve, after all.

To be fair he always ate on stage.

RATM remains a pretty boring band, but still atleast they try something as activists.

i like rage enough and dont think theyre sellouts, but this video is sick (not sick meaning good, but sick meaning bad). the freedom chant? rage never advocating violence, im gonna look back at their lyrics, but that just aint true (riding thru rodeo with a shotgun comes to mind)

Also the one video (for Freedom, I think?) that was talking about how the leader of the Shining Path was imprisoned in Peru, or something.

I mean, if someone expresses support for the Shining Path I would assume they kinda support violence as a means of creating change.

From the little information I've read about the Shining Path, it seems like the entire group is composed of psychopathic lunatics with a Mao fetish.

That could all be dirty bourgeois lies, though...

That's right.

Artists have got to starve, after all.

Musicians make the majority of their money from live shows, not CD sales. Most money on CD sales goes back to the store selling it and is then distributed throughout the label (producers, technical folks, CEOs, etc) with very little actually reaching the band.

Yeah, because I forgot that if they knocked their prices down to $5 for one of their Billboard 200 #1 albums, they would starve to death.

nah, that's the video for Bombtrack. the video for Freedom has the information about Leonard Peltier and the American Indian Movement.

Say what you will about Rage, but by going mainstream they have a wider distribution of their music and message, just like Sendo said, and have the opportunity to actually spread ideas rather than just reinforce them in a few people in their local scene.

I'll be honest and say that Rage Against the Machine's music played a part in getting me to challenge my old ideas. Just started listening to them at the right time in my life, I guess.
