Just thought I'd start a topic about your top 5 political bands. Lets broden our musical horizons and give us more brain fuel.
Mine in no particular order are:
1. NOFX
2. System Of A Down
3. Dead Kennedys
4. Anti-Flag
5. Frenzal Rhomb
Obviously none of them are purely political but they all have their fair share of the political songs.

I kinda found it funny at first that the bands are all the same for everyone but as I started to ponder about bands that are actually political I couldnt reallly think of any. For me its like this.
1) DK (80s Russian punk/zek group, anti soviet in general especially critical of the government and peresktroika)
2) RATM
3) dead kennedys
4) gries ( Swiss rapper, raps about socialist stuff)
5) brigada c ( more 80s Russian punk!)
Red October
2nd September 2008, 22:43
In no order:
1. Los Fastidios
2. The Oppressed
3. Angelic Upstarts
4. Public Enemy
5. Brigada Flores Magon
There's waaaay more than that though.

I don't know how much I would consider The Specials to be political.
Redskins
The Clash
Angelic Upstarts
Choking Victim
I like all of those bands because of the fact that they're good, the politics have nothing to do with it. I'm not too into overtly political music, especially preachy stuff.

I don't know how much I would consider The Specials to be political.
The Specials were always left wing as were most of the bands on 2 Tone. Just listen to songs like 'Why?', 'Rat Race' and then the later Special AKA stuff like 'War Crimes' and 'Nelson Mandela'.
Gramsci's Ghost 1970

Yeah, The Specials were definitely political. On the Dance Craze album after playing Man at C&A (an anti nuclear war song) Terry Hall said to the crowd 'Yeah another song dedicated to the Tory government and the shit they're leading us into'. In addition, Their final single Ghostown was an indictment of Thatcher's Britain.

Manic Street Preachers - A Design For Life, doesn't need any comment from me
The Clash
Bob Marley
Dan Le Sac v Scroobius Pip - Not all political but 'A Letter From God to Man' defintley has overtones
The Pouges - If I Should Fall From Grace With God is one of my favourite songs
didn't give them numbers because sometimes I like one more than the other, but I'm inclined to change my mind depending on my mood :D

Hmm, I thought I already posted here... I'm prolly trippin' :D
Anyway, here's my list:
- Dead Prez (especially their pre RBG joints)
- The Coup (I've only heard their first 2 albums and some songs from their later releases as "Jesus The Pimp" and "Get Up")
- Public Enemy ("Fear Of The Black Planet" and "It Takes A Nation Of Million" are my favourites)
- Paris
- The Goats
BTW, does any1 have songs "These Are The Times", "Root Of All Evil" and "Together" from Dead Prez in decent quality??? I got all of them but they are shitty quality.

I know what you mean. I see two different types of political bands, preachy ones whose music is based entirely around politics like Anti-Flag, which really annoys me, and bands that sing about being working-class, and in the case of The Specials and a lot of Oi! bands growing up in Thatcher's England, which I like. I usually don't really think of the latter as being political bands, but you could say they are I guess.

Gang of Four needs to be added.
Gang of Four's Entertainment is one of the best rock albums ever.
What about NWA?
Sex Pistols should be added to at least ONE list.
GBH anyone?
Tops? I like all of the lists here, but Public Enemy, DK's and The Clash are on the top of mine.

Manic Streat Preachers
Rage Against The Machine
The Clash
Dead Kennedy's
Public Enemy
Personally, allthough it's not an explicit political band, I do concider Nirvana as one of my favourite ("political") bands. I really like their anti-heteronorm attitude. Cobain was a junkie, but also a leftie if he wasn't as fucked up with heroin.
I really like the gender-bashing attitudes from Nirvana. It was actually the reason why I'm a Nirvana fan. They were probably one of the first alt-bands in the mainstream who dare to talk about controversial, left-wing stuff. Even though they weren't traditional leftists.

Sex Pistols should be added to at least ONE list.
I'm gonna say No. Not even in the slightest. If you ever had the following thought cross your mind you need to re-evaluate yourself if you think your a punk."Sid Vicious was so punxrawkkkkk"
Sex pistols preached shitty politics at best. They were suburban boys trying to act like they were street level. Sid Vicious used to get beat up almost daily, because there's a diffrence between an anarchist and an asshole. I told myself I wasn't going to explain myself so i'll just stop there and leave you with a band that REALLY should have been on someones list. Who can also tell you why The SP's are not to be regarded as revolutionary AT ALL.

Their bulls on parade video is still one of my favorites and reminds me of stuff I was involved with around the time it came out.
I don't generally like 'political bands' aside from them. I like bands that will have a song or a line in a song that's extremely political and well put that I really like. Aesop Rock- some of his abstract word smitheries are badass.

Well, I dig The Dead Kennedys. There "Methodist Coloring Book" REALLY happened to moi. It was a water color on plastic of Hay Zeus but same thing, 100% as the song.
Also Neil Innes' (Bonzo Dog) "No Matter Who You Vote For" is a polysci song moi digs muchly.
Big tip 'O' the shroud to Johnny Lennon.
Say, did I see a, not too old, photo of Mrs. Lennon where she's wearin' a Christian cross?
I recently heard Tom Lehrer's "Warner Von Braum." His song parallels moi's wee Von Braum bit
[Let's name someone who suffered no CULTure Shock during the 1940s]
to a great degree. Also just listened to his "My Hometown," just too cool. Oh, these are at YouTube.
I like some of Country Joe's stuff.
