View Full Version : Alcohol - Why does everyone seem to need alcohol
Moskitto

yeah, i know this is topic 2 about alcohol, but anyway.
I'm constantly being told "oooh, you don't want to go to Cardiff, the beer isn't as cheap as in Aber", "neah, you couldn't live off it, but it's drinking money", "don't get a car or you won't be able to drink", "keep alcohol in your room, it'll be nicked" (ok, that is true) then there's my mum watching a dieting program and they all say "the diet's ok, but the rules on alcohol are hard", I'm not saying I don't drink or that it should be banned, but why is it that everyone around me is basing opinions and life decisions around the consumption of alcohol?

It is simply because alcohol has become a fixture around us. We obsess over it. For one reason or another, people seem to prefer alcoholic beverages to water. Why? Because alcohol is addictive. Which is why my opinion(which i will not restate) is as such.

Drinking makes us forget our problems... Makes us do stupid things, so we can laught about them when we are ok. Itīs a way of "having fun" for many of us...
Keep on drinking! Keep on smoking weed!
Take extasis pills! Fight for world peace!
Fight the injustice that affects so many in our world!

That quote from Marx, I can't agree with more. I don't drink, and plan on never touching alcohol again. It only makes us drown our problems away, so it's bad.

Prohibition of alcohol is an anti working class position. Who where the prohibitionists that passed that godawful law the first time around?
Not Socialists, Not communists... they supported the working class, not the interests of the employing class...

Drinking makes me feel g-o-o-d inside, i feel alive.
i hate myself when i'm sober, i really do.

Marx did not say that, he loved a good bucket but what is true is that many of the poineers of socialism were involved in the temperance movement.
When comes to the drug culture in all of its manifestations, socialists should be in favour of informed choices. The drug culture perhaps will never die out , but ignorance can be replaced by knowledge.
The problem of the drink culture is that it is that it is
a massive part of the economy and the social life of most nations in the world. There is no easy answer to that and only better general health practices and satisfactory social alternatives can provide a way forward.

Well I think if Mazdak wants to live in a dry society he should move to a dry county in the south. Here in New York Alcohol is a big part of our culture.
You want to go ban Alcohol Mazdak? Go live in the Bible belt, but don't bring that prohibition shit to New York. We've dealt with your kind once already.

Christianity doesn't restrict alcohol. In Christian areas people drink themselves stupid just like anyone else, occasionally even more then anyone else.

me is not wanting it banned or saying i don't do it, sure, i do enjoy the occasional drink (except champagne, i absolutely hate champagne), but i wouldn't go to a university i didn't like simply because the beer was cheap, and i wouldn't cry if i was expected to give my friends a lift to the pub on saturday night.
acually a funny story about alcohol where someone was unfairly blamed was once at a christmas party someone won a 24 pack of fosters which he left on his table and returned to find someone who was only just in upper school had drunk half of them and was lying on the floor telling kathy how sexy he thinks she is and everyone thought it was his fault for letting him drink them even though it wasn't really. I've seen loads of funny things involving alcohol before, some of them might make social services quite concerned.

Have you ever heard of a Dry County? There are whole counties in the south where one can not buy alcohol because the dominant religion is Born again Christian.
There's where Mazdak should move to.

Well naturally there are some that are more radical than others. You might know of a group that serves real wine, although most I know of use grape juice. Most Protistant churches are actually going to that to accomindate people who can't drink any alcohol at all, not because they are against it as a recreational activity.. ;)

I agree with Umojahs setiments. Alcohol like cannabis is reactionary. It is the duty of the revolutionary to be as aware and responsive as possible to his/her material reality. We should aimprove ourselves by acting collectively to alter our material conditions and economic relations, not rely on alcohol to temporarily make us happier by doing something on the inside

All the posts here are of course about opposing ideologies. It's just me.. I don't get it. Show it to me! Are you going to change the world with your beer in your hand? If you had to shoot at this instance, you'd be dead yourself.
To drink alcohol is to finance the current governments (through taxes), and, therefore, to resist revolution in the world.

I enjoy a nice G and T, and once I drank an unusaul capitalist and communist mixture of Havana Club Rum and Coca Cola, i'm surprised it didn't have a nasty reaction, although it was rather tasty. and our local cheap german supermarket sells a rather nice pina colada with cream in big bottles, sometimes Vodka is quite nice, although i've heard warnings that some of them contain methanol (the methanol doesn't give you a hangover if you drink it with ethanol;)), and i enjoy a nice port and some real english ale is very nice and some lagers are nice, but red wine doesn't really appeal to me that much because in the circles i move in it's drunk as a table drink and since i normally drink water with meals, i never really drink it, but white wine and wines such as vino verde i rather enjoy, and i absolutely detest wines such as champagne, I also have a strong objection to drinking sherry and whiskey, although i do enjoy southern comfort especially with ginger ale.

You can always set up a still or home brew, none of the components are taxed. Wait a minute, your posting this message using a PC which WAS taxed. Why don't you follow your own advice.

Drinking or smoking is ok if it's for pleasure, but when you are doing political activities it should never be done. When you're doing political work you have to be aware of anything.
The black panthers were aware of this and took it in there rules:http://www.marxists.org/history/usa/workers/black-panthers/unknown-date/party-rules.htm

That's compleatly idiotic. If you drive a car you are paying tax on the gas, if you work for a living (legally) you pay tax on your wages, if you purchase ANYTHING you pay taxes.
And worse yet... if you go to school... and can't afford a privite school, you have to go to State, and pay yet more money into the system. Even if you go to Privite school... part of the money you pay them goes to TAXES.
Instead of putting a ban on alcohol, can we put a ban on stupidity?

Thank God, D-Day, you've seen the light. I was reading "Conversations with Eldrige Cleaver" and he was commenting on the fact that he would love to smoke weed, but it only holds him back from accomplishing anything revolutionary. How can you change the current state of things for everyone, if your to busy changing your current state?
