Today Hollywood's take on the 1999 WTO protests in Seattle, "Battle in Seattle" premiers in cities across the U.S. Strangely, we are being faced with the fact that one of the most important events in recent anarchist history is about to be re-broadcast to the world through Hollywood's lens. Though the director of the movie claims his aim is to accurately represent the events of the protests, obviously there are some holes to be filled. In an attempt to fill that gap, we've written up a flyer that can be distributed wherever the movie is shown to help give movie-goers a better sense of where the anarchist movement is now, 9 years later. Feel free to print this out and distribute it outside of movie theatres, or write up your own. Especially if this movie gets picked up for wider distribution, it will be crucial that we are there to present our side of the story, and to fan the flames of inspiration for anyone who may be inspired after learning about what happened 9 years ago in Seattle.</p> You can download the hand-out here:

I disagree with most of ya'll. I knew I would see it, but I thought the trailers made it look terrible. Well, 30+ radicals got free tickets to a movie theater, and got rowdy in the theater during the showing- really fun. So that skews my view of the movie. It is also skewed cuz I watched This Revolution again with a friend of mine two nights before, and that one is just awful.
Well, it was better than we all expected. It was actually pretty good (ahem, for Hollywood). Clearly anti-WTO and more protester-specific than I expected. It also sucked (but not enough to not see it). I can tell you it sucked in the following ways without spoiling anything: persistent and over-the-top sexism; the mayor is a protagonist; a pig apologizes; shitty explanations of our politics (turns us all into issues-based activists, and says "we're not against free trade"); never once uses the word capitalism; sensationalizations and sappiness. There's more, but some of it would spoil plot points for you.

Typical Hollywood move... Radicals are always portrayed as mindless anarchists (not saying all anarchists are mindless) who only dislike the government/state or only have a single issue they care about (no real ideology, or mentioning of ideology really).
I haven't seen the movie though, could be okay.

Despite its slander of my worldview (yeah, anarchists are sexists interested in media attention.. nevermind the attacks on the media), I still can't help feeling good after watching it. Damn Hollywood movies making me think maybe we can beat these fuckers...

I recall that the activist group I'm part of wants to see this movie and then discuss it...
Although I don't think it's filming anywhere near South Florida.
Now I'll be having a harder time explaining anarchism/anarchists due to those inaccuracies... :( (although if we do watch it I'll be given a good platform/ opportunity to discuss anarchism, so maybe it's not all that bad.)

Some Seattle anarchist vet was on DN! alongside the director and gave it critical support and recommended it.

So it's sort of like 'Reds' or 'Ora o Mai Più' in that it gets a lot of political things wrong, but is still very important and inspiring?
Anyway, I should see this film sometime, sounds interesting.

I heard it wasn't too bad, but the police officer character becomes reconciled to protester. I'll probably check it out sometime.

The film had a very limited run in about a dozen US cities last autumn. It's definitely worth seeing, and will probably become more accessible once it appears on DVD.
By the way, it got a good review in The Economist because the anonymous reviewer happens to a communist (unbeknownst to the magazine's editors of course.)

I thought it looked rather lame, but altogether I wasn't too sure what to think about it. I'll certainly have a look since so many people have recomended it, but who knows what I'll really think of it.

I've seen the trailer. The nasty bad anarchists ruin it for the nicey-nicey liberals. I think I'll give it a miss.

19th March 2009, 14:46
nah, its not so bad, the bad anarchist turns out to be a provoker from the police (duh, its hollywood), and the director/makers are pretty understanding why it turned violent (they put the blame firmly on the cops/failing politicians, the proters justed vented treir frustrations at being molested etc.)
see it, its intresting...

The "nasty bad anarchist" (there's only one that's nasty and bad, the others are good and heroic) is a police provocateur.

An hour-long look at the 1999 Seattle WTO protests and the anarchists who traveled there to set a new precedent for militant confrontation. Filmed in the thick of the action, including footage that aired nationally on 60 Minutes, it captures a moment when world history was up for grabs.

I hated Battle In Seattle, it cheered wishwashy liberals as "the next generation" and jeered anarchists as police provacteurs.
So fucking hollywood.
Also Andre 3000 cant act.
