So the olympics end!

What have we learnt? Do people think that they are a vindication of China's ruling communist party?

I also have to point out that if you look at medals to population ratio the UK are better than Russia, China and US. Which means that the UK has better athletes. Ha.

It serves to legitimize China's violent role in world politics and their atrocious human rights record at home.

It was intesting to watch 80,000 Communist Chinese singing "God Save the Queen" at the closing ceremonies.

You have to hand it to those British.

Thank fuck for that!

Nothing of substance has changed.

Why should I give a shit? I find athletics one of the most boring things in the world.

yeah it was funny seeing them have to stand to god save the queen, even if it isnt the best national anthem in the world.

By china's ruling communist party i am refering to the ruling party in china, which is called the communist party of china. Thought that was obvious but obviously not.

I know, watching a People's Liberation Army officer salute the Union Jack was one of the most surreal moments of my life.

Thet didn't have them, but they had Jimmy Page looking FANTSATICLY out of place.

As far as sports goes--it seems that most Commies on RevLeft have a problem with them. Maybe it's the competition?

Nope, it's the fact it just bores me.
We do have a special sportsgroup on here.

Here's something pretty funny from AOL:

The Beijing Games concluded with the closing ceremony today, and the Summer Olympic torch was passed off to London. A performance by Jimmy Page of the British band Led Zeppelin was part of that hand-off from Beijing to London, but it turns out that some folks think Zeppelin lyrics aren't appropriate for all ears.

Page and Leona Lewis performed a version of the Zeppelin classic "Whole Lotta Love" that had some of the lyrics changed and others excised so as not to offend. Lewis didn't want to sing (http://www.newsday.com/services/newspaper/printedition/sports/ny-spolylyric245814651aug24,0,417299.story) the line, "I'm gonna give you every inch of my love" in the second verse, because she said she didn't think that particular "sexual innuendo" made sense from a female singer. So "inch" was changed to "bit."

And the third verse, which includes the line, "Shake for me, girl, I wanna be your backdoor man" was deemed inappropriate and was cut from the ceremony.

Jeez, a harmless, innocent song, and these Mary Whitehouses have their heads in the gutter. What pray tell, do they think a "backdoor man" is? To anyone with half a brain it's obvious it's meant to refer to someone who makes deliveries, because they don't use front entrances--deliveries like flowers, and teddy bears, of course.

We are gonna have to rely on the fact that all the most innovative, talented musicians come from Britian. Cus we aint gonna match the chinese for organisation thats for sure.

. . .I may be of a dying breed, but I really don't care what colours the athletes wear; I watch to see some of the greatest athletes that humankind can muster compete.

That Bolt guy was simply phenomenal.

And not a moment too soon.

Unfortunately I think many people will. I however, never endorsed it. Not that my home country is an example to lead with of course.

The UK still sucks. Somehow I cannot imagine the country's youth being inspired by this. The olympics are a celebration of braun of brains unfortunately - although perhaps at London 2012 we can have a "car theft" or "stealing trackie bottoms" event?

haha funny disobey, you should take up comedy.

As fo you Arizona, damn you! New Zealand and Australia (they are pretty much the same country right? :p) always do well at sport. But you contribute nothing else to the world.

And no i am not joking about the musicians Noxion.

By the planets, have you no sense of taste? You actually think the crap they put on the radio is of artistic merit?

no but we do have a hell of a lot of good music, more so than other countries. I dont like him but David Bowie for example, the who, new order, led zeppelin, paul mcartney (once again an artist i dont like but he was in the beatles so). All of those are bands/artists who are still playing today. Better than most i think you will agree.

Jacques Rogge would be proud of your first statement. I still feel some alliance to countries. However, it really is stupid when they say they're carrying the hopes of the country.

Bolt could learn to have some humility, but other than that, he is amazing.

I agree, but he was young and excited (he turned 22 last week); so I don't hold it against him too much.

I expect by the next Olympics when it's not such a new experience for him to see Usian Bolt calm down a bit (if he doesn't, thenI'll label him as a showboat.)

Killfacer

of course hes a show boat, he smashed two world records. I think most of us would be show boating, whatever our age. I saw an interveiw with him after anyway and he seemed pretty modest for a triple olympic gold winner.

He probably was standing next to an American who was an eight time Olympic gold winner at the time.

it was kinda hard to know what is real and what wasnt with the olympics in beijing because the little girl singing at the opening ceremony was miming and the fire works in a television ad were done on a computer. aswell as that when a chinese cyclist fell off they stopped the race and restarted it just for one cyclist!! it makes me wonder if an attitude like that affected cycling how would it affect other sports like diving and boxing where judges were needed

Zing!:lol::lol:I'm much more impressed by a track star then a swimming star; there's more competition, for one.

Swimming is pretty much the same general event repeated several times (different distances and different strokes, but the same event.)

Not to belittle Phelps' achievement; I'll give credit where credit is due; that was amazing unto itself; however, few athletes other then a swimmer can even get an opportunity to win 8 medals. (. . .also about Phelps: he seemed a nice enough guy during interviews, but the media portrayed him as some sort of "U.S. Nationalistic Superman-Demigod", and that got really annoying really quick.)

Now Bolt was just a runner (and you can make the same argument that it's the same general event repeated at different distances), but I was much more excited to see him run then to see Phelps swim.

In my opinion, the Olympic athletes that really are the best athletes are the ones who do the pentathlon and decathlon (since they have to do so many different things), but they only get one medal.

Muchly agree with you there. I've competed in the half Ironman triathlon in years past (non-Olympic by far, and I was of the lucky to have finished variety never mind the time), that's running, biking, swimming and the cross training for that was pretty intense. These penta and deca guys ansd women have to utilize every inch of their bodies--a perfect example of what the Greeks had in mind when they started the whole thing off.
