I bought a copy of the Communist manifesto and Marx talks about the population evening out gradually. Why was he so keen on this?

The concept isn't clear to me, but in the manuscript _The German Ideology_, an early attempt by Marx and Engels to describe historical materialism, there are eight references to "town and country", and every one of the references calls it either an "antagonism" or "conflict of interests".

Could you cite the passage for context? I have no read it in a few years and do not recall this specific point.
