View Full Version : Carnaval / Mardi Gras - Farewell to the flesh (Lent)

Tuesday is the day before Ash Wednesday, the beginning of a 40 day period of fasting and penance for Catholics. All over the world, from New Orleans to Rio de Janeiro, Venice to Puerto Rico, a pagan-rooted celebration known as carnival is taking place. Debauchery is the signature for these celebrations, with masks, music and lots of nakedness! Are any of you in this forum in cities with carnaval celebrations? Any you attending your local carnivals?

Borincano, as I write this it is just after 7:00 AM local time -- about 1-1/2 hours before the first of four parades begins...right in front of the apartment building I live in! :o
I do not know how it is in other places, but here it is very definitely a "capitalist celebration"...the emphasis is really on sticking it to the tourists.
Many locals in the "hospitality industry" (that's what they call the tourist-fleecing racket now) make up to a third of their annual income during carnival.
And, as always, the number of portable toilets is hopelessly inadequate...the consequences I'll leave to your imagination.
I have mixed feelings about carnival...it's great to see folks having a good time...not so great to see the greed that's just below the surface.
Tomorrow, the "traditional Catholics" will go around all day with smudged crosses on their foreheads...I wonder if that's supposed to cure hangovers?

Mardi Gras = Fat Monday. Gota love that kind of holiday, except that it also implies that many people do not eat because of the capitalist nature of this planet.

I think that I'll take up drinking tonight so that I'll have something to give up for Lent...and also to belatedly celebrate May Day. All my friends get blasted at work every May 1!
Fuck, LOL, I was thinking that this was May!

The main carnaval in Puerto Rico is in the southern city, called Ponce. Every year around this time for the last 250 years, people march near the Plaza Las Delicias wearing devil-like masks called "vejigantes." Some also wear "cabeduzos," which are large, grotesque-like heads that mock famous and corrupt politicans. People play bomba, which is an mostly African-derived traditional music with many percussion instruments, and people also play plena, which is a mix of European, African and native instruments. There are knights and queens of the carnival as well.

I hate the whole idea of celebrating an event which did not happen, and i never give up any thing. Infact i may start a new bad habbit like, eating excessive amounts of chocolate. Or doubling my alcahol consumption.

I generally give up Soda, I rarely drink it anyway, but it's not worsening my health to give it up.

Well, Carnaval is celebrated also here in Ecuador...
But, in a different way, for ex. in the streets anyone can throw at you water ballons, or anything to get you wet.

Ohh that is so true.
Because Mazdac asked nicely i will tell you what it is. Its a particularly stuck up person with foolish mannerisms ect. Generally stupid, with an over exagurated opinion of their abilities.

Oh, and why is that? I think the "ponce," here is you. All I asked was why were you "laughing." I also asked in which English-speaking country is it a "curse word," because I know for one it isn't in USA. That's all.

I went to Mardi Gras in New Orleans for the first time this year and it was fun and interesting. I did get a picture of something that I think you'll all enjoy. I thanked the people for having the courage to do it.

I called you a ponce because you not only were being sarcastic to socialist2000 and patronising, (which is probably the reason why he called you a ponce) but you also took the piss out of me, so i called you a ponce.

Umm, where was that? I wasn't being sarcastic nor patronizing him, just asking a question and stating why I never heard that word used deragatorily before.
I think next time before you just place "LOL" in front of a word, you should just write why you think it's funny so as to avoid misinterpreted postings. ;)
