Mugabe's praise discredits Chirac
From Adam Sage in Paris

ROBERT MUGABE fuelled controversy over his invitation to the Franco-African summit in Paris yesterday when he heaped praise on President Chirac for the tremendous hospitality he had received.

His words appeared to discredit M Chiracs claims to have given the Zimbabwean President a dressing-down over his human rights record at a private meeting on Thursday night. They added to speculation that M Chiracs real aim in issuing the invitation had been to woo Zimbabwes President as part of his attempt to extend French influence into Anglophone Africa. Mr Mugabe, who was put up with his wife and entourage in a luxurious Paris hotel at the French Governments expense, said: We felt at home here.

He told Radio France Internationale in an interview shortly before flying back to Harare: We have received tremendous hospitality, and we are leaving with a very good impression of France. His remarks will be an embarrassment to M Chirac, who said he had invited Mr Mugabe to Paris despite a European Union travel ban so that he could tell the Zimbabwean President face to face of his concerns.

Look Chirac is damn weird but his policy on Iraq and the way he handles Yankiee Imperialism is damn well first class. I dont claim to be a supporter of miser Chirac in fact i was hoping the Socialist candidate would win but Chirac is there so thats that. He is being honest in his approach to Iraq and is using commern sense to try and stop a horrific bloody war in Iraq and build an opposition that might be able to stop the US.

That pretty much sums it up.

In my mind, there are very few Frenchmen who could qualify as truly right-winged. Chirac is not one of them.

Do you think he is 'centre-right' then? He is still a cappie. He definately isn't centre, but I guess he isn't far-right.

What makes the majority of French people incapable of being 'truly right wing' Dark Capitalist?

Surely you cannot deny Chirac is an ardent believer in capitalism. If so, how can you deny that he is right-wing?

Watching Fox News a couple days ago I hear the Fox man (a channel that is notoriously right wing) concede that Mr Chirac is the most americanized, the most sympathetic French leader EVER to America. In fact Chirac even lived in America for a while. While i dont dispute the fact that it was wrong for Mr Chirac to be buddying up with Mugabe it is hardly an alien concept for America to buddy up with tyrants, and mr.Chirac is hardly a leftist....
