“We are about to witness a major new develop-
ment, with far-reaching consequences: the direct imperialist occupation of the whole of Iraq. Further, it is widely reported in the American press that the United States plans to use the invasion of Iraq as a launching pad for a drastic re-shaping of West Asia.”

Even if it is for oil, which it's probably not, I'd still support the war in Iraq. Hey if they really do want to take Iraq's oil, be my guest. No skin off my nose. Not to mention as that report pointed out it should help the economy somewhat. Or at least indirectly.

Did I mention that, unlike some of the other capitalists here, I actually support certain types of imperialism?

I read it, peacenicked, and was amazed.

My sleep would be more restful if I believed the US had as much power as articles like that seem to imply.

Does the rest of the world really believe the US has that much power? Do you think we have the ability reshape a continent and do it all just for a resource? I don't and I'm stunned at the thought. The US doesn't have that kind of power. Americans don't think in those terms. It's just not going to happen.

Did the world think this way before 9/11/2001?

HankMorgan.
The answer to your question about the world believing the extent of us power is yes. This book is useful here.

While it is true that most American dont think in these terms,
there is a group at the top who does. Bush got in on isolationist policies. Some joke on the people particularly the mobile voters, who elected him.

Sept 11. A horrid tragedy was also symptomatic of frustration of the powerlessness of the rest of the world against american interests. No matter who did it. No evidence has been produced that has not been circumstantial or explainable by terrrorist bravado, even the Japanese Red army claimed responsibility. However this article (http://www.washingtonpost.com/ac2/wp-dyn?pagename=article&node=&contentId=A37999-2001Sep27&notFound=true) describes for me the mood in the Pentagon and the Whitehouse.
It is gung ho against Islam.
Hope you sleep well as the bombs smash babies skulls perhaps you could ask the US UK bombers to save one of their heads as a souvenir.
