i am a huuge fan of simple and rugged stuff, most of the stuff i buy is rugged, simple and useful.
But i was looking at the cellphone of someone in the bus, and i was thinking how fast the developement of certain manufactured good can go.
the more the research advance, the more the technology change, is replaced etc. But the replacement of those technology mean junk, or a certain recycling process, a process that would employ a lot of people that could have done something else instead of that.
if you look at it, the speed of technological advance create a awful lot of junk, junk that nobody is actually able to properly recycle.
do you think, if a communist supwepower become a lead into technological stuff that kind of thing will happen too?
of course we can say, in a communist society we recycle everything but, if the man power is short, would it be more easy to do like we currently do? forget the problem?

heres the responses i see you getting.
1.) the magic of communism will solve all of our problems.
2.) we must make sacrifices/ you don't need that capitalist crap.
3.) we magically transition to a state where everything is recycleable.
4.) no fuckin clue, we'll probably continue to create new and trash the old.

With rapid technological advance, will come obsolescent products at a faster rate. Recycling will be a very important industry in the sort of rapidly advancing society.
There is nothing wrong with creating jobs in the recycling industry, especially if jobs are being quickly eliminated due to the exponential advance of technology.
It just means we are one step closer to post scarcity.

everything will be used to it's FULLEST extent.
capitalism is extremely wasteful, surplus etc etc.

but, if we use stuff to their full potential, then it mean that the worker gonna sweat like madman to lets say, make robust portasble phone, but a new model gonna pop up in 1 year, and everyone will change their model, so the first model will become obsolescent, so much effort for that?

Absolutely. However I think further emphasis on maintenance and repair of useful items is needed by such a society as well as recycling. Things at the moment aren't built to last -- capitalism benefits of course from planned obsolescence. Almost to the point that it's sickening to think of the sheer wastage, not only in usefully exploitable mineral resources but also in human labour.
Just look at the complexity of the modern car for example -- much inside and out is not needed (save for safety systems which are absolutely excellent nowadays). Would a socialist society produce cars with a very minimal specification (no electric windows, radio etc) not only to save energy but labour as well? And if so, who would decide when to replace the existing "fleet"? Or would we ever need to replace it?
I don't think true communism would land men on the moon for instance. Not because it is incapable, but because these are not relevant the basic needs of the people and furthermore it such activities were infact a desire to display the technical and ideological superiority of certain nation-states (USSR, USA) and systems of power (Western capitalism, Soviet statism) - which would not be required in a global, federal socialist system.

One of the more interesting theories in Orwell's 1984 is that when
Big Brother" takes over technological advances will somehow slowdown and stop.
Technological and scientific advancement has in the past sometimes slowed down--that just might happen again in the future.

You could test part of this by implementing policies that reward energy efficiency. Or have a long period where energy prices remain high.

there was a similar discussion to this about a sportscar. It ended up with commies telling everyone that when the world is communist they wont want nice cars.

glad you read my threads killfacer.:D
i think the problem is that even if you eliminate planned obsolescence, you still have naturally occurring obsolete crap. i honestly believe we will continue to have a mix of new and old, some with higher functionality and some with less. just because theres a hot new item out doesn't mean everyone wants it. my cellphone is still huge and awkward, but it works so i keep it.
