for those of you who care:
I beleive that a communist governent would work in Ireland, albeit with several ill effects.

Pros:
1.)Because Ireland is built on an agricultural system, a transition in this area would work very well.
2.)Ireland already manages much of the food in England and the EU, so they could work with this.

Cons:
1.)Religious nation (but so was Russia)
2.)People are, for the most part, satisfied with their situation. Northern Ireland could be easily won back in a variety of peacefull ways.
3.)Tourism-Ireland's largest industry would be severely hurt. While the US would attempt sanctions and try to end US tourism therein, one must remember that there exists presently in the united states at least 45 million people who can traces at least 1/2 of their family tree back to ireland. The European nations that account for a large part of the industry would not be affected unless Eire made some stupid political decisions.

Pros:
1) Actually Ireland is becoming more and more industrial
2) While Ireland may export a lot of food to the EU, if Ireland was to stop exports, this would have no real effect on the EU.

Cons:
1) It's changing
2) The republic, at the moment, is already entered a downturn in the economy. People are extremely unhappy with the situation and if the North was to come back to the control of the republic the situation would be even worse. Also there will never be peace in northern Ireland as long as the country is under the control of either Britain or the republic. A seperate state must be established.
3) The U$A is the main exportee of Irish goods and also accounts for the large number of technological firms in this country. American restrictions would cripple this country in the situation it is in at the moment.
3)

youre forgetting the all important con- that Communism can not be established in one small nation.

on a different note BOZG i don't believe that about the Republic not wanting the 6 counties. i think it was 90% in favour of re-unification at the last poll. some things are more important than money to people. an economic downturn would be a small price to pay for the re-unification of our nation.

and an independant nation suits nobody really. i'd be in support of it as a stop gap measure, but the Unionists wouldn't.

I'm sure that the 90% is the true figure but I'd say its a very very small percentage of that figure really care about a unified Ireland. While a lot of people say they'd like to see a 32 country Ireland, they really can't be bothered doing anything to achieve it. It really is armchair nationalism. And while it's a high figure, I'd say you'll find that number drop drastically if you were to say that it would cause the economy to slowdown even further.

"and, you know, socialism always works, in all places, at all times... "

I hope that was sarcastic.
