If you listen to Ska, let's hear what your favorites are at the moment.

I'm really, really into the Mighty Mighty Bosstones. And I think Streetlight Manifesto is one of the best things to ever happen to third-wave ska.

Only the original 60s rocksteady, and then The Specials from the 2nd wave. After that, things get a bit annoying to my taste... some third-wave ska sounds more like Bavarian Octoberfest music to me.

I'm into Desmond Dekker, the Specials, the Skatalites, etc. I do like the third-wave new American stuff though. The only rocksteady band I really got into was Madness. Two third-wave bands that still have heavy influences of old ska are Mustard Plug and the Toasters.

Dicky Barett rules! I'm still a loyal Bosstones fan you know being from the east cost in all:)

Actually in the 80's alot of us knew him

From the originals out of those not mentioned yet I'd definitly recommend Lee Scratch Perry and Toots & The Maytals.

I dig the whole 2-Tone thing myself like Bad Manners, The English Beat and The Bodysnatchers.

Didnt care for the third wave scene, although Operation Ivy is quite good.
Leftover Crack and Voodoo Glow Skulls have a few good songs but you gotta kinda search through them to find them.

my favorite ska band would have to be the Bosstones. they were really ground breaking when they were one of the first bands to blend ska with punk and hardcore. those guys can play anything, every song they cover is better than the original. they also put on one of the best shows ive ever been to.

What sent you to New Mexico, anyway? And where from the East coast are you? I'm born and raised and still reside in New Jersey :)

I love the fucking Bosstones. I really do. One of my favorite bands, of all genres.

As for that small subgenre (Leftover Crack, Morning Glory, Choking Victim, INDK, F-Minus, Star Fucking Hipsters), I think it's the reverse; I like most of it, but there are some I don't like; you gotta kinda search through to find them though. I really like Leftover Crack, actually.

Best ska band around at the moment are Pama International - http://www.myspace.com/pamainternational

Older stuff I love - Laurel Aitken (The Godfather of Ska), Desmond Dekker, Prince Buster, Potato 5, The Deltones, The Loafers, The Selecter, The Beat and the Specials.

This ska album should be in everyones collection -

I was trying to think of Laurel Aitken's name before, I just said Desmond Dekker because I couldn't think of his name and he's the closest to the godfather of ska that I could think of, I like both of them.

Btw, Westbound Train is a wonderful band. Please Forgive Me and Seven Ways to Sunday are amazing songs.

patent pending played really well down in ft. lauderdale. the lead singer climbed up onto some speakers onto the upstairs balcony and jumped off into the crowd. it was great.

Since so many of you are afraid to dive head first into 3rd wave ska (I grew up to 2nd wave, so that remains my favourite, but I do like 3rd wave ska, too.)

Save Ferris (redheads are hot)
The Hippos
Rancid
Reel Big Fish

and my absolute favourite 3rd wave band:
The Aquabats

So I saw Catch 22, Patent Pending, The Supervillains, Awful Waffle, and some other bands 3 nights ago. It was seriously a great show. Patent Pending puts on a phenomenal show, I love Catch 22's music, and I discovered the Supervillains for the first time and found I really, really, REALLY like their music. Awful Waffle was pretty awesome as well. This band that played early covered "Beer" by Reel Big Fish which was cool. It was a great night.

While I'm talking about shows this summer I went to a Less Than Jake and Goldfinger gig in New York City, which was great. Westbound Train was AMAZING. :wub:And I had a lot of fun during Suburban Legends. Then, in Sayreville, NJ, at Starland Ballroom, I saw the Mighty Mighty Bosstones play with the Dropkick Murphys and it was great, it was a treat seeing the dropkick murphys, and the Bosstones didn't disappoint, as always.

I'm going back to the Stone Pony in Asbury Park on the 22nd to see Westbound Train with Bomb the Music Industry! and Tsunami Rising. :)

I like crowds that are big enough to open several pits, as I like to be in the smaller ones because they usually include the kids that actually know how to skank  The huge central pit is crowded and stupid sometimes. I like the ones where the point is to actually DANCE.

Atilla the Stockbroker

Attila The Stockbroker ska?
As much as I love Attila I think he's only ever recorded 2 ska tracks - 'Bagdad Ska' and a cover of 'Tom Hark' which he recorded with the band Seagull Ska. The cover of 'Tom Hark' actually made it into the top 20 of the UK charts but the sound is a lot different than his usual stuff.

i had an interesting moment of LimeWire the other day:

i downloaded some Op. Ivy, which is not really ska but more punk. LimeWire gave it the genre of Skunk. I use that term a lot now for Op. Ivy, Rancid, Leftover Crack, and choking victim.
