I've heard comrades say this is the fundamental problem of capitalism. Could someone please explain why?

Because private property creates a ruling class (probably not the best type of words to use, but it's early in the morning), those who own the property and charge the workers for it's use/living in/whatever.

Private property forms the basis of class division under capitalism - the proletariat is comprised of everyone who does not own productive property and so has no other way to survive except by selling their labor power to a capitalist, in exchange for a wage which is less than the value of what they produce and just sufficient to purchase the basic goods they need to survive and continue working. The people who own property (otherwise known as the capitalist class) are able to take control of the goods produced by workers, which can then be sold to generate profit which is accumulated by the owners, even though they may not make a physical contribution to the production of goods.

yea, its through there ownership that they get power, take the playgroup example, one kid is given all the toys, now all the other kids want those toys, and so the kid with all the toys can make the other kids do what ever he wants in exchange for sometime with his toys, and so he becomes the ruler of the playgroup only because he has all the toys, property,
hope that helps a bit lol

Because those who privately own the social product thereby control the whole society.

Of course we're talking about private means of production. Your personal things are aside.

Property= the shit that enables you to make other shit. Factories, land, mines, farms, all are property. Property is the fundamental problem in a capitalist society becuase those who own/control property, perform little or no work themselves. Yet they receive the greatest portion of the benefits from the property (profits). Meanwhile, the workers who make everything and do all the work receive a very small portion of the benefits of production (wages). That's it in a nutshell really.
