A strike by some 2,500 members of the PCS civil service workers’ union on Friday of last week severely disrupted the Identity and Passport Service (IPS).
The action is over the fact that management have yet to offer a 2006 pay deal to workers. The union made a claim in June.
Paul McGoay, the acting PCS vice-president of the IPS group, said, “It took 15 months to get a pay deal last year. Members didn’t want to wait again for an offer but negotiations have got nowhere.
“We want a decent pay deal, delivered on time - which we aren’t getting.
“There is a feeling of anger and frustration among members. They are pleased to see a union that is active. We have recruited people in the run-up to the strike and on the picket line.
“We are also now working to rule and making sure that has a big impact.
“Every area of the civil service is facing similar issues over pay. We could also face job cuts in the future.”
Gnabressou Gbode, a striker in London, told Socialist Worker, “It is very difficult to live on our salary. People are struggling to pay the bills. The cost of a passport has gone up in the last few months while we are getting nothing.
“We are giving our best and people are just not being rewarded. People are angry.”
The strike hit offices in London, Liverpool, Durham, Newport, Glasgow, Peterborough and Belfast.
Khalid Hussain of Glasgow said, “Management don’t really care. It goes in one ear and out the other with them.
“It’s not hard to come round the table and discuss pay. But they turn round and say they don’t have time.”
Brian McKenna, a member of the union’s group executive committee, told Socialist Worker in Newport, “No union members have crossed the picket line. Appointments are severely restricted.
“Our members are extremely angry at management’s total disregard to delivering a pay deal on time.”

And cue this swill from our ever reliable right wing press:

(http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1037305/Three-day-strike-3-000-passport-staff-threatens-summer-holiday-chaos.html)http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1037305/Three-day-strike-3-000-passport-staff-threatens-summer-holiday-chaos.html

Complete contempt for the workers and unions is the order of the day here, and of course the usual "poor consumers" rhetoric. I know we should expect nothing less from the likes of the Mail, but it's important to know what kind of crap they are spouting on a regular basis.

The Tories are warning that Britain is in the grip of a wave of militancy in the public sector.
Labour is now almost totally reliant on union leaders for funding and there is concern that they wield an increasing influence over policy.

Absolute bullshit I'm afraid, Labour has not been "reliant" on trade union funding for quite some time. This is yellow journalism of the highest order. Can you believe my parents read this tripe?

You're correct the trade unions were phased out years back while New Labour was created. Most funding like the tories comes from business's.

I still find it shocking that pieces of shit are still printing total BS and people shallow it with out question. (Most my family read the daily mail.)

Edit = Grammar change. :cursing:

Is there a sticky thread somewhere we can post links to disinformation pieces? It might be useful - after all, when we get into a debates/arguments with people on the right (or those who sympathise with the right) it's useful to be able to quote recent news articles that they may have read and show them how blatantly false they are.

I've lost count of the times I've either "lost" or not managed to articulate well enough in an debate because I was unprepared on a particular issue and when I get home I find out the whole thing could be easily disproven!

I have had similar experiences mainly a few hours later I come across a perfect example of what I was trying to disprove with information to rip it to pieces.
