Drugs involved in friendly fire deaths

By Michael Buchanan
BBC correspondent in Washington

Two American pilots accused in a fatal "friendly fire" incident in Afghanistan took amphetamines before it occurred, an enquiry has found.
The pilots were taking the drugs prescribed by the United States military when they killed four Canadians last April, according to US Air Force investigators.

They are awaiting a court martial hearing due to start next month.

US Air Force majors Harry Schmidt and William Umbach face up to 64 years in prison following the incident over Kandahar. The pilots thought they were being fired at and dropped a laser-guided missile on their presumed attackers.
It was only when they had killed four people and injured eight that they were told the group were Canadian soldiers taking part in a night live-fire exercise and that they had informed the US military.

But it has now emerged that about an hour before the incident the two men had taken amphetamines, or speed as it is commonly known, that had been given to them by the US Air Force.

'Go'-pills

The pills, which are illegal in the US, are given to combat pilots who are involved in long eight or nine-hour sorties in small controlled doses, say the military.

The Air Force stopped prescribing the 'Go' pills, as they are known by the pilots, in 1993 after reports that crews using them during the Gulf War became addicted.

But the drug has been quietly reintroduced in recent years.

The Air Force says they are a medical tool that is essential for combat pilots being sent to war over Afghanistan and, possibly, Iraq.

The US puts people in jail for taking amphetamines without a legitimate medical prescription, but they give it freely in the name of combat to increase alertness and stamina.Terminally ill cancer patients can't smoke pot to relieve unbearable pain, but pilots must take speed to do their job.Do they take "downers" after the mission???

Well put. The US is a disgrace. President Bush should make an apology to the international community. It's the only way to save face.

Figure the commander in chief smokes crack so it must be alright to take a little speed.

who says he smokes it, maybe he snorts it, with a bong on the side for afterwards. and then a little shot of LSD, after that, gives the command to nuke Iraq.

Hey, the drugs didnt mess with his reasoning, he had to write down what he was gonna do on a peice of paper, so he would remember after getting stoned.

The fact that they took "go pills" was merely coincidental. Those dosages are strictly controlled. They are utilized to maintain awareness and reflexes over long-duration missions. They are not administered in large enough doses to adversely affect pre-cognitive judgement by themselves. The US airforce would not risk pilots and multi-milion dollar aircraft to that kind of degree.

The natural adrenaline secreted by a pilot during a combat situation is more likely to make him "jump the gun" if he does not maintain a cool head than the prescribed stimulant is, as unfortunately occured in this instance.

This was an isolated incident, and not indicative of the usual cool head and situational awareness displayed by most American pilots that is yielded by American combat flight training.

Of course the US doesnt want that happening, why the hell do you think they give them speed, keep them awake so they dont crash the expensive planes, and then die. Cause it costs a lot to train those people, but if they just stuck a civilian in his own aircraft and told him to attack, they wouldnt give a damn about what happend, no loss of money to them, no problem.

CI.Some of those cool headed pilots became addicted to speed during the golf war.Sure,it's a pretty good investment to have a speed addict controling a multi-million dollar aircraft !?

Haha, the US has yet more egg on its face! It would feel good if it wasn't a couple of people using pretty potent drugs encouraged by the US, when back home they have sick sick drug laws.
