Does capitalism help create depression/insanity? - Why is it

Being a rather mentally unstable person myself, I often ask myself the question why? And why so many around me. I grew up in a middle class suburb in a large city, and I have met people from many walks of life, from the supremely rich to people who can hardly put shoes on thier feet. The large portion showing a lack of comfort with the world around them, whether they would like to admit it or not. I often come to the conclusion that it is the system. It would seem to me that our very humanity is fucked-with by capitalism, from our ethical/religious beliefs to our natural instincts.
I believe that the competitive drives of capitalism work with and against the achievements of our civilization. It is because of the co-operative instincts of man that we have come up with ideas such as: global community, democracy, and free trade. All of wich are twisted and distorted by capitalism, backfiring against humanity. The intense drive for capital distracts and stifles philisophical thought, making it seem impractical.
With capitalism, anything and everything has a price, giving the illusion that life and your soul are worth nothing more than money. Christians and Muslims say that greed is sin, but with capitalism; greed is the name of the game. Christians aren't sopposed to covet thy neighbour's goods. Coveting thy neighbour's and anyone else's goods seems all that one can do. For athiests, our ethical values placed upon us by our ansestors are attacked in the same way.
Our consumer society creates material abuse of every kind, and alows the networking for large scale drug abuse. And studies have shown that the heads of large cororations are often sociopaths.

As our numbers increase, leftist will have no place to hide as we turn the political culture against the very people who aim to destory our way of life. Jokes over, I agree with redcanada, I think capitalism and it's current stage especially have a huge affect on the mental and emotional health of all members of society. It encourages an unhealthy level of competition amoung other things, which I can't quite put my finger on. I knwo very few happy people, and these few are usually living lives where capitailsim has very few effects.

Of course, it would seem unhealthy to someone incapable of competing. One thing is for sure, capitalism allows for winners and for losers. Judging by your attitude, you are one of the losers. What is wrong with my attitude? I don't like competition, so what? I'm not going to try to stop people who I know can do something better than me, I will just do what i can and hope it is good enough. I will be able to feed and clothe myself, therefore I will be a success because I am not obstructing others and I am looking after myself.

Mental problems may not be commonly caused by capitalism (I won't say that it don't happens, especially in your case), but the free competiton surely is draiing for those who are working in the companies figthing. The freer the market, the worse will the average day be, the more possible it is that all but one company will die, the more possible it will be that the market will become a monopoly...

That fact that this book was a best seller has to do with marketing and only marketing. Dangerous? Explain how YOU are dangerous, the idiots in your country would love to hear from a raving asshole like you. The only thing dangerous about people like you is that you would put trust in things like the bush administration. It is onliy because of people like you that I sometimes fantasise about violent revolution. I will agree that current socialism is being threatened.
