I've been working at a newspaper since January of this year, and yesterday, for the first time, politics came up in the office. Well, it just so happens everyone I work with is a staunch Republican that's pro-gun, pro-life and anti gay marriage. They all plan to vote for McCain.

With me being a self-proclaimed socialist that supports Obama, considering him the lesser of two evils, I feel extrememly alienated. When asked my opinion, I merely said I didn't feel comfortable talking about politics as work. Besides, I'm a reporter ...

I feel your pain. At least 2 of the people I work with are hardcore conservatives. One is my supervisor and always listens to Rush Limbaugh after lunch, the other rants about immigrants, the joke of global warming, and how things were better in her day. I'm actually voting for Obama too, mostly because this is the first election I can vote in and because I want him to win so that people will see that the most progressive candidate out there won't change a think, afterwards I don't plan to vote again, maybe locally if something good presents itself (which I highly doubt)
I'm going to ask a few questions here about what my co-workers said to get a good socialist response:
-"ADD/ADHD is just a thing made up that pussy parents made up so that they don't beat their kids- which is the only real solution. I knew a kid who "had" ADD and when he lived with his uncle, who beat him everyday, he didn't have ADD anymore, untill he got back" Bah???
-"People are poor and homeless because they are lazy, if they tried working they'd be fine. They might not be paid well but its better than nothing" grr
-"Nigger isn't a bad word. It just means lazy. That's how I use it"
-"I don't see anything offensive about the swastika. It's culture" funny thing, I brought up how it is used in eastern cultures, and she got totally lost.
Keep in mind this was said in such a way that you could feel the hatred spewing out. This was actually just the one. She's also said that she plans to ride with hundreds of other bikers past a guys house who complained about it last time because of how loud it was.
Now what Rush has said:
"Democrats/Obama are: members of the far left, elitist, plan to destroy America, are socialists/marxists, blah blah blah"

I'll stop there, sorry for jacking your thread, but there is much more I need to rant about.

I want rush limbaugh dead.

you shouldn't avoid the conversation even with nazi scums,if they ask your opinion say it and who knows they might see and the "light" and realize the shit they believe!asking your opinion when know what you represent is a "window" and you should take it!

I used to talk politics with such guys for fun.
To some of them I presented extreme nihilist views, to others I tried to impersonnate the stereotypical Stalinist bolchevik who talks perfectly with a knife between the teeth. Curiously (or not), they seemed to have more sympathy to me when I played the authoritarian freak than when I tried to calmly explain to them the basics of marxism.
Others times I led them to agree with more and more obviously fascist positions, or to ask precisions and justification on their beliefs until by force of logic they take themselves such positions. It's easy to bring them quite far if you manage to avoid to burst out laughing.

But I didn't work with any of them, and I always could have stop if they turned mean.
So maybe it would be too risky to take even caricatural anarchist or marxist stances in front of them. But you can still try to encourage their fascist sides : maybe they will end up humiliating themselves in front of a less convenient auditory, or maybe they will understand the inherent absurdity of the respectable part of their thoughts.
In both cases, you risk nothing... except if one of them is also a disguised leftist who try the same thing with you. Of if you begin to take them seriously.

You could begin slowly with a printed tshirt like this, just to test their reactions.

I can feel your awkwardness, but you have to set that aside and stand for your principles. It could well be that some of your collegues are not agreeing with McCain's politics at all, but just vote for them because they don't know any better. Discuss with them and take some daily problems in a political context.

Also, with your statement on voting for the "lesser evil" Obama, you might find this (http://socialistalternative.org/news/article10.php?id=870) and this (http://socialistalternative.org/news/article10.php?id=871) article interesting.
