First, any mainstream pop artist that is popular is so because of two reasons: the consumer public is dull enough to accept such standards (how many teenagers think it doesn't get any better than Blink 182?), and the capitalist mode of production is applied also to the production of aesthetics. So when you have simple, mediocre automaton consumers listening to music produced in such an atmosphere.....you have a great mass of amateur quality art that is accepted, then abandoned the moment a new trend is introduced.

Difficult point--in mass culture, maybe yes. But my little angels (and I as their father) are in a highly sophisticated world of classical music that gets better and better. Serious kids playing and occasionally writing better and better music than has been played for a long time. You won't here it on the radio--but there are brilliant kids playing brilliant music.

Also, despite pointing out that the music has mass appeal you've yet to identify what makes it of "amateur quality" (Bear in mind that when you talk about specific examples you'll probably have to link me to them, I've not listened to the radio or watched music television for ages). It is a self replicating/perpetuating blob of shit, actually. A proper genealogy of the history of music is needed to understand how it has evolved and in what context. Despite that, the "standards" are determined quite simply. Producers in the music industry carefully maneuver between two things: music they produce must be more similar than not to what was previously popular, and, it must also have a streak of novelty so that it is accepted as innovative and new, but not so radically new that it requires more effort to produce. It has to be simple since the public is simple. Little tiny gradations in the styles of music are necessary to keep the ball rolling. Take metal, for instance. It worked for several years. Sales drop a bit, a decade or so passes, a new generation becomes the target consumer group, but metal is so easily produced that they don't want to do away with it. What do they do? Ah! Mix it with rap music. There is nothing new here. When the family gets sick of eating tuna salad and macaroni, what should you do? Make macaroni tuna salad and they come running to the dinner table.

Listen man. Consumers are Pavlovian dogs. They become conditioned to desire what is provided for them. I'm telling you that as long as there is a "market" there is going to be a dumbing down of all art that is circulated in that market. The capitalist market has only two things in mind: produce as much as possible with as little effort as possible. This is why there are new rock groups appearing every fifteen minutes. Among the 836 examples of injustice and corruption I have personally experienced, which I will list in my book that will be published shortly after my suicide that I must willingly commit in order to prevent being incarcerated for killing several people, is this recent experience.

I am currently working for a "temp service". This is a place that provides temporary laborers for companies and/or people which need only temporary help. For example, a construction company needs two guys to dig a ditch, and rather than hiring permanent employees, they will use employees from the temp service. The temp service provides insurance for the employees...which is one reason why companies find it convenient to use their employees.

These temp services are infamous for using the scum of the earth as employees. Naturally, such scum are attracted to these places, since working for them is non-obligatory....and since you get paid daily. The majority of the employees are either homeless, or lower class who live in low income housing.

The temp service pays employees daily. There are three different wages which are paid, depending on the skill level required for the job assignment. There is unskilled labor, semi-skilled labor, and skilled labor. The skill level is determined by the nature of the job. So, for instance, a company that needs a ditch dug will request unskilled laborers. A company that needs a laborer who can operate simple tools would request a semi-skilled laborer. So on and so forth. Also, the temp service charges the client a rate depending on what kind of laborer is needed. So the temp service will charge the company $15 per hour per unskilled laborer....and they will pay the laborer minimum wage...which is about $6.50. So the temp service is making a profit that is more than twice the amount paid to the laborer.

But before I explain the recent issue, I want to quickly explain another issue with this temp service I experienced a couple weeks ago. When you go there in the morning, at 5:30, you sign in. As the companies begin to call and request workers, the workers are sent out to the jobs in chronological order. It is a hit or miss situation. Some days you might sit there in the waiting room for three hours and get nothing. Other days you get an assignment the moment you walk in. Anyway, after waiting for two hours, my name was called. I was given a job assignment that required two workers. Since I had a vehicle, I was the one who would drive to the job. Now listen. The other guy who was ordered to go to the job with me smelled so bad I could not endure having him in my truck. It was that bad. I shit you not. So I refused the job assignment. What happened? I lost the opportunity to work that day.

Check this out. I'm not a fucking taxi service. Nowhere in the policy handbook does it say "as an employee, you are obligated to drive other employees to a job location." But because I refused to drive this rat to the job, they wouldn't let me go.

Now to the recent issue. A construction company that is working at an airport has used me for three days now. Since I have done so well, I have gotten a "repeat" ticket, meaning I continue to work for them as long as they need me.

I am being paid $8.25 per hour, which is a semi-skilled wage. Now, the company told the temp service that I would be performing simple tasks, one of which is washing trucks. This is the job description listed on the ticket. But this isn't what I am doing. I have been driving a steam-roller as big as a fucking monster truck....tamping down a pad which is being made for the construction of a hanger which will be used to work on aircraft.

Here is what is happening. The company has lied to the temp service, telling them that they only needed a semi-skilled worker, so that the rates they have to pay to have me are lower. I told the manager of the temp service that I have been operating heavy machinery, which is a skilled position, which would put me into a higher wage bracket- $12 per hour.

Now the manager is going to call the company and confront them about their lying to the service. There is a good chance that I will not be able to go back, as the temp service will cancel the contract with this company. If that happens, I might be waiting for days before I get another assignment.

Here is the moral of the story. The company is fucking the temp service, which is in turn fucking me harder. When the company admits to having me operate heavy machinery, and has to pay a higher rate to have me work for them, will I be compensated for the hours I worked at the semi-skilled wage? Fuck no. Furthermore, will the temp service find a replacement job for me after they cancel the contract with this company? Fuck no.

This is how a guy goes mad, people. What needs to be understood here is that they very fact that I am even at this fucking rip-off place is because of some other capitalist fucking me somewhere down the line.

The list of lies which I have experienced in my dealings with capitalists goes on and on. Why I am living now at poverty level (in my truck, literally) is not because I cannot work, and not because I don't want to work (I love to work), but because I REFUSE TO WORK when I am being lied to.

This is perhaps what distinguishes me from the "backward" masses. The others of the working class are either too stupid to notice the countless lies and injustices that affect them...or they notice, but are passive and complacent.

It takes a good many years for such an annealing process to be completed. I am a madman in the making. Everyday I get a little closer to the edge. What has stopped me, so far, from "going over" is what little enjoyment I have for simple things in life. The moment these things become boring to me (and they are), I will have nothing to lose....and then.....snap.

What moves the world toward the inevitable reconciliation of all its socio-economic problems are the individual examples who refused to remain quiet. I can only imagine how many people have become martyrs that have not become known by the world. I know that I cannot possibly be the only one who has these experiences. I know that although a majority of the working class are incompetent, a few of them are enlightened but powerless.

I certainly am not seeking notoriety. What I am seeking is a way to contribute to stopping my experiences from happening to other people.

Think about how awesome that would be. I could be the first politically motivated serial killer....what psychologists call "missionary" serial killers. What the serial killer hall-of-fame needs is a genius Marxist serial killer. I would be in the encyclopedia of serial killers: John Doe. Killed 147 capitalists between the years of 2008 and whatever. When asked why he did it, he replied: "I am a one man revolution."

My interpretation is this: you see how several minutes pass in the game while nothing happens. The philosophers are walking around only thinking, like they have done for centuries (an allusion to Rosa's point that philosophers are an enormous waste of time).

The appearance of Marx in the skit was to represent the the arrival of Marx to European philosophy- "philosophers have only interpreted the world...the point is to change it" is here "philosophers are only walking around on the field....the point is to play the game", if you like.

So Marx symbolized the expectation to "make shit happen" in the game.

The comic irony, of course, is that after a grand entrance into the game....Marx ends up walking around himself and does nothing.

So I went to the temp service again this morning to get the repeat ticket for the job I was doing last week, driving the steam roller.

Just as I suspected, once the manager of the temp service questioned the company about the job I was doing and found out that they have been lying....the company suddenly doesn't need me anymore.

To summarize, for those who didn't read last weeks posts about this:

I was sent out on a semi-skilled ticket, $8.25 per hour, to "wash trucks and move dog kennels". That was the nature of the job as the company explained it to the temp service. What I have been doing, however, is operating heavy machinery, which is a skilled position, and which should put me at $11 per hour.

When I told the manager this, he called the company this morning and confronted them. Sure enough, they canceled the contract.

So, I was screwed out of $2.75 per hour for a total of 24 hours, because the capitalist lied.

And if that isn't enough, I screwed myself out of the $8.25 per hour for several more days of work because I TOLD THE TRUTH and reported the incident to the manager.

This is not the first time this has happened to me and it won't be the last.

If I remember correctly (been years since I read his autobiography), one of the band members had an issue with security or the hotel staff, of both. They decided to make a parody of the incident.

What C.R.I.M.E and bogovich represent is the tragic habit of some communists to become convinced of their own great importance and form "parties" with grandiose goals, names & rhetoric. Another good example of the very same phenomenon would be the Maoist International Movement (I believe they are now defunct, I think both of their members got angry with no one taking them seriously or something.). WHile I don't see any point in trolling these people I do think they should be distanced from serious leftists of all stripes.

A good rule of thumb when you're judging an organisation - if they have written more than, say, a paragraph about an internet forum where the members don't like them then it is entirely likely that they're not a big or important group and probably never will be.

I wacthed the documentary Paul Merton in China, and they have these 'schools' where children practce a certain 'activity' non stop to try and hone their talents at such particular skill. One of these was playing instruments, and in the documentary there was a young Chinese child, probably about 5 or so, playing piano like a pro. I think these 'schools' are what produce so much musical talent, I hear they're popular with Chinese parents, who, because of the one child policy, are incredibly focused on making their child 'a success' or 'special'. It looked high stress, and really...fake, to me.
Sort of like trying to manafacture artistic genius.

A good try, but a sonnet is supposed to employ iambic pentameter and should be fourteen lines long, e.g.:

Ok, yes, thank you. I bought the Penguin one, which actually isn't made readily available on amazon if you search for just the title (I actually bought the book at a Borders' store).

I looked it up and it seems to be based on a complete translation, whereas the Ginsberg (or whatever) one is from an incomplete one and I don't know about the O'connor and Burgin.

Others have said it is good and same authors who did the Penguin one have translated other Russian texts quite well according to reviewers.

It's all 19th century stuff. Nobody discusses the "dialectic" any more--or for a least 100 years. Just look at the titles in the discussion board--it says it all.

It would be interesting to discuss cutting edge Maxism and its relationship to human ethics.

Indeed. That's why (I don't know how,) if us OIers would promose to behave we should be allowed to contribute to certain RF forums. Not the usual OI "My side's better than your side," but good interesting conversation.
