Today Strom Thurmond turns 100 years old. Which gives hope for the rest of us:
He should die any day now. :)
Amazingly, he's still a senator; but you know he's a puppet for some evil, multi-national corporate conglemerate. Seriously (he's from the south, first of all). And witnessing him operate is disturbing. It's like watching the movie, "Weekend at Bernie's."
On one hand I always gotta give respect to a vet. Apparently he was dropped behind enemy lines in Normandy prior to the invasion. That's one thing.
(However as a side note, the majority of those paratroopers dropped were way off-course; so, nice work, Capt. Thurmond)
That said, the whole "hero" slate is immediately wiped cleaned when you flash forward a decade or so to when Strom, big-hearted paradigm of tolerance and wisdom that he is, fought ferverently against intergration of schools, restaurants, water fountains....etc...ect...etc....
In other words, a true fraud.
It's actually more sad than anything else. He can't walk or practically move without some kind of help. It's depressing. Like how the fact that Lynyrd Skynyrd is still on tour is depressing.
But more than anything, it's scary-- because you know there's someone behind the scenes pulling the strings.
But fuck him. To paraphrase Robert Altman, speaking of his nemesis, film producer Don Simpson:
"I only wish he'd lived longer so he could suffer more."
