I normally don't dig anti-choice rappers, but he's pretty good.

Good news!

Kayne West is not a rapper; he is a hip-hop artist.

A former girlfriend got me into hip-hop a couple years back; I like Kayne West (even if he is a little pop.)

edit: oh, by the way, my favourite song of his is "Good Life".

He's a boring, fairly talentless rapper in my opinion. I don't like him. And i don't like the fact that we're all supposed to like him.

Gold digger is an appallingly bad song, but West as a whole is a cut above the usual rubbish, I think.

Kanye West is a terribly sexist and reactionary artist.

Kanye West is the shit. Anyone who thinks Kanye West is 'sexist' or 'reactionary' is a self-sodomizer, i.e. a dick with their head up their ass.

I love "Touch the Sky" and "Good Life", but not all of Kanye West's music. I have to agree he's quite egotistical, claiming that he was "one of the kings of this business" in the recent BET music awards (or something like that). But all in all, you have to respect the man for what he does.

Hip hop is further down the evolutionary chain from rap.
While rap concepts (the rhythmic chanting) can exist in hip hop (but does not always), that does not mean hip hop is rap.

The two-tone beat of ska (sometimes called the "skank" or "riddim") exists in rocksteady, reggae, two-tone, rockabilly, and other ska descendants; would you call all of these genres ska?

Likewise, rock is a descendant of R&B, jump blues, boogie-woogie, jazz, and ultimately ragtime. Would you consider Chuck Mangione and System of a Down in the same genre as Scott Joplin?

Overrated rapper, boring lyrics and crap flow. His social political commentary has been done before and is really nothing special...acts like a ***** too.

I don't think it's that complicated at all. Hiphop is a noun indicating the genre of the music. Rap was originally a verb eg. "can you rap?", this verb later became a noun and later became used to represent the genre. I'm a purist when it comes to the words i use. So if someone asks me what music i like i say "Hiphop"...saying "rap" is about as silly as answering that question by saying "sing".
