You may, or may not be aware that as you read this... several cloned babies are being developed, the first will be born in early January.
I've posted a link to the cnn story on it. I posted it here because I'd like to hear everyones thoughts on cloned babies that are no longer a hypathentical question but now a reality.

Scary, yet it would be the biggest thing to ever hit mankind. It's not suppose to be done, yet its being done....

I'm speachless! This is something we have talked about back and forth as something that isn't a right or left issue...
However now here it is a reality, and there are so many questions to ask! What to the parents tell the kid? You aren't really your own person but a clone of that guy over there?
The abortion issue of today is going to seem insignfigant to the clone issue of tommorow...and, as it seems that clone issue for HUMANS will be sooner than expected!

I really have no problem with it, until it turns into an insidious program to develop armies of super-soldiers, perfect in every way and without conciense. That will eventually happen, somewhere down the road.
It really is an amazing scientific breakthrough, though.

but isn't that what opening up to this new science is going to lead to? The ability to grow new slaves? New Soldiers?

Frankenstien. Star Wars. Which is scarier? They both deal with this topic.

I think Star Trek is the major sci fi movie you are thinking of that adresses the issue of clones and human genetics.
I don't think Star Wars talked about it...
and Frankinstin was about taking parts of dead bodies and making a human out of it... not related to hmuan genetic clones.

we'll eventually have a clone war, and the clones will triumph, ban cloning completely, and the world will return to normal....

If it seems so obvious that clones shouldn't be allowed than why does it still occur? Does just passing a law truly restrict people?
Here is a flaw in your capitalist society, if people can make money they will. Your laws will not stop them, they have discovered the code to make human babies and it won't be very long from now that you can buy a baby like you do a dog or cat.... you need some extra help around the yard? Go to the cloneing ceter and pick up a copy of a human.

"I don't think Star Wars talked about it..."
I don't suppose you have seen Episode 2 Clone Wars. Jengo Fett is the father to an entire army of cloned soldiers. Great movie, far better than Episode 1. Seeing Yoda in action was definitely worth the $6.50.

There is no reason to believe that a cloned person would be there own person. They are cloning cells not brain waves. You think if Marx was cloned he would grow a big grey beard and walk around dressed like it was the 19th century?
I'm appaled. I'll read the article and then see what else.

You are mostly shaped by your enviroment, not be your genetic structure. Communism is not a genetic trait :)
bah, the more technology we use the more reliant on it we become.

That's very true. It's quite sad really.

Cloning. It is an advance in medicine but perhaps society is not advanced enough to treat clones as more than second class citizens. Cloned babies will be merely manufactured orphans.
I dont see cloning becoming widespread and it would be only dangerous if they were to be socialised for a special purpose to suit the needs of the powerful or any religious purpose.
The technolgy might be an option in areas where underpopulation is an enduring problem but it takes so long to produce an adult, that the danger would be abusive child labour.
We should watch developments carefully.
