View Full Version : Making your shins numb

A cool technique some of my buds have taken up to make our shins less sensitive is tapping up and down the shins with a rod, bamboo stick, or metal edged ruler. Just soft enough that it doesn't force you to stop, just hard enough that it tingles afterwards.
This helps for those of you who often end up in fist fights and the like.
Most of the feeling is gone in my shins, a few spots still sting every now and then, just make sure you don't accidentally break them.

i heard that a lot of martial artists, hardcore devout martial artists i mean, kick their shins against trees. that i guess would require much more tolerance of pain than your technique.

Yeah, I got this from my karate school, we just do it regularly, it works decently, but takes some patience. I have one fanatical fighter friend who does this religiously and has no feeling in his shins, but I just need enough to handle hitting shin against shin.

Fuck, that seriously can't be good for your shins. They have nerves for a reason you know. You'd better watch out for bloodclots and cancer, induced by the trauma, if you're gonna persist in doing that.

Why would it matter anyway? It won't stop you from breaking your bones in your shins, it would just allow you not to feel anything in your shins, and I doubt that someone in a fight would care about the feeling in their shins over anything else.

I don't get why you would want your shins to lose all feeling. Simply because you can't feel your shins doesn't mean they won't break...

I could see that helping because if something does hit your shins, or if you use them as an object to hit with, the pain wouldn't be as distracting, thus keeping you somewhat more focused.

muay thay fighters train like that.

Not just the chins, the abdomen and the part of your arm above your hands too. (notsure if they use metal edged rules though. COuld be dangerous)
They also put heavy people to stand on liying people's abdomen.
Its rough trainment but it works fine. Muay thai fighters kick butt, specially in street fights. They usually combine this and some other martial art for the floor.

I personally prefer less contact martial arts, because i'll still be able to defend myself as I do now when I get old, but this is a way to go.

When you get hit in the shins, by lets say a nightstick, you will be greatful that you cannot feel it. If you go up against a martial artist, you often will clash shins with the person when going in for a kick. Also, if you smash someones shin, and continue to make a move for it, the person will start paying more attention to their leg and less to their stomach, or face, or whatever it is you really want to bust up.

While this is good for fighting you feel pain for a reason, it is a sign from the body that the part is injured. Unless you get an x-ray after each fight I wouldn't do that.

All the above points are valid, but as a Thai Boxer I understand what Conrade B means. In muay thai we block by using the shins and it kills! But then if you didn't feel pain then you could injure yourself seriously without realising. I prefer evasion to blocking...less pain!

With the shins as a weapon, you can also inflict pain upon your opponent when they attack, teaching them to fear to move in on a place where your legs can block. Okinawan Karatedo prefers to counter and bruise over evade.

I'm not saying to evade all the time! But in Muay thai when a low roundhouse kick is thrown it can either be blocked with the shin, or evaded by moving the lead leg and countering with a kick from that moved leg as it returns to the front.
