Im watching the EURO 2008 and the melody of the Russian national anthem is exactly the same of the one they used for the USSR.. so did they change the lyrics?? or are they still singing about Lenin, and going towards communism???

The lyrics of the actual Russian anthem are all about glory and pride for the country..

Well, Yeltsin introduced a completely different anthem during the 1990s, but that one just plain sucked, so Putin brought back the melody of the old USSR anthem - but with different lyrics.

There is also a kick ass rock version of the new Russian national anthem if you didn't know.

You can find it at hymn.ru .

Russia — our sacred stronghold,
Russia — our beloved country.
A mighty will, a great glory —
Your heritage for all time!

Chorus:
Be glorious, our free Fatherland,
Ancient union of brotherly nations,
Ancestor-given wisdom of the people!
Be glorious, country! We take pride in you!

From the southern seas to the polar region
Spread our forests and our fields.
You are one in the light! You are one of a kind —
Native land protected by God!

Chorus

A broad expanse for dreams and for lives
Is opened to us by the coming years.
Our faith in our Motherland gives us strength.
So it was, so it is, and so it will always be!

Chorus

The English translation from Wikipedia. What can I say? So rises the fourth Reich.

The Soviet version had the words great Russia in it so it displayed nationalism to a certain degree as well. I'm sure most people have the soviet lyrics going through their heads when its played, I know my folks do.

^^^ Not the original 1943 lyrics (which I've memorized in RUSSIAN) :p
